Veteran Filipino singer Hajji Alejandro, popularly known as the “Kilabot ng Kolehiyala” in the 1970s, died on April 21. He was 70.

Alejandro passed away following a battle with Stage 4 colon cancer, a diagnosis made late last year. His death was confirmed by his family in a social media post on Tuesday, April 22:

“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Dad and Son, Angelito ‘Hajji’ T. Alejandro. At this time, we kindly ask for privacy as our family grieves this tremendous loss. We appreciate your understanding and support during this difficult time. To God be the glory.”

A prominent figure in the Original Pilipino Music (OPM) community, Alejandro rose to fame from the 1970s onward as a solo artist after initially performing with the Circus Band, a group that also launched the careers of several other notable Filipino musicians.

His popular songs include “Nakapagtataka,” “Panakip Butas” and “Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika.” His “Kilabot ng Kolehiyala” moniker reflected his popularity among young female audiences during the peak of his career.

Alejandro is survived by his children and grandchildren. – Gie Trillana
