‘Sang’gre’ expands ‘Encantadia’ universe

After two decades, GMA returns to the magical realm of Encantadia with the premiere of “Encantadia Chronicles: Sang’gre,” a spin-off that introduces a new generation of elemental warriors.

The series begins airing today, June 16, promising a deeper exploration of power, destiny and strength.

Leading the cast is Bianca Umali as Terra, daughter of Danaya and a human named Theo, and the newest keeper of the Earth Gem. Raised in the mortal world, Terra takes on a dual identity as a superhero codenamed “Sang’gre,” eventually called to defend the world of Encantadia.

Joining Terra in this mission are fellow Sang’gres: Faith da Silva as Flamarra (Fire), Kelvin Miranda as Adamus (Water) and Angel Guardian as Deia (Air), a kind-hearted honorary Sang’gre from the frozen kingdom of Mine-a-ve.

The series also introduces a formidable new antagonist in Mitena, the Ice Princess of Mine-a-ve and newly crowned queen of Lireo, played by Rhian Ramos. As the latest wielder of destructive power, Mitena’s motivations are complex — a challenge that Rhian openly acknowledged.

“It was such a challenge because I believe that all people are intrinsically good and that no one is born bad,” Rhian said at the press con. “It comes from a place of pain, of trauma, and for me to understand my character was my biggest challenge. Justifiable ba ‘yung ginawa ni Mitena? I don’t think that our situations will ever justify our actions. It’s always still a choice of what you choose to do and how you react to what happens to you.”

For Kelvin, whose character Adamus serves as a guardian of wisdom and reflection, the show’s themes go beyond fantasy.

“‘Yung mga bagay na makakasira ng bayan ay hindi pwedeng parating lang maganda,” he said. “Kailangan i-expect din natin ‘yung negative na mae- encounter natin dahil ‘yun ‘yung magdadala sa amin sa kabuuan sa pagkatuto natin sa mga kasalanan, sa mga pagkakamali natin. Doon tayo natututong lumaban ng patas, maging matapang, maging better person.”

Angel, who plays Deia, emphasizes resilience and quiet strength as core values viewers can take away from her character.

“Sometimes it’s quiet, or sometimes it leaves a scar, or sometimes it forgives… it’s choosing to stand in the storm without losing yourself,” she explained. “Nakikita ko talaga si Deia, ‘yung strength niya sa loob.”

The return of the “Encantadia” franchise also marks the comeback of the 2016 Sang’gres — Glaiza de Castro as Pirena, Kylie Padilla as Amihan, Sanya Lopez as Danaya, and Gabbi Garcia as Alena — who are all thankful for the roles that made a mark in the heart of viewers.

Co-director Enzo Williams, who helms the project alongside Rico Gutierrez, acknowledged the hard work behind the scenes.

“The entire team showed incredible commitment — long hours, difficult scenes, and all with such passion. Their teamwork really lifted the overall quality of this project,” he said.

He also noted the series’ technical innovations, including enhanced post-production and visual effects. “These new techniques and technologies allow for a richer visual narrative,” he added.

The cast is rounded out by a mix of veteran and emerging talents from both the world of “Encantadia” and the human realm. The ensemble includes Manilyn Reynes, Buboy Garovillo, Benjie Paras, Sherilyn Reyes-Tan, Martin Del Rosario, Therese Malvar, Mika Salamanca, Gabby Eigenmann and Bianca Manalo. Ruru Madrid, Michelle Dee and Derrick Monasterio have a special participation in the story. The late Ricky Davao, who passed away in May, also plays a significant character in the project.

Produced by the GMA Entertainment Group, “Encantadia Chronicles: Sang’gre” is overseen by OIC and Vice President for Drama Cheryl Ching-Sy, with the show’s creative team consisting of Aloy Adlawan, National Artist Ricky Lee, Suzette Doctolero, Des Garbes Severino. Doctolero is the head writer with Onay Sales-Camero and writers Patrick Ilagan, Emerson Jake Somera, Greg Aldrin, Libay Trinidad- Villaroman, Nehem Debad Dallego.

Airing weeknights at 8 on GMA Prime and GMA Kapuso Stream,
“Sang’gre” is also available to international viewers via GMA Pinoy TV.
