“Sinagtala” is like rain on a summer day.
Timely and refreshing, the Mike Sandejas movie is perfect for this season.
The story of bandmates turned family, “Sinagtala” delves into the complexities of their struggles with money, sexuality, family, vice and personal identity. Each member has their own issues and challenges – but through music, friendship and faith, they are restored and find strength in each other.
The leads — Rhian Ramos, Matt Lozano, Arci Munoz, Rayver Cruz and Glaiza de Castro — are well-cast. These actors also happen to be musicians in real life, and are notable in both dramatic and musical scenes. Special mention goes to Matt and Arci, whose scenes combine humor and kurot sa puso. Kudos to Benjie Paras and Robert Seña, too, whose brief roles add a layer of warmth to the story. The seasoned actors bring heart to the scenes and give solid support to the main cast.
A major element in “Sinagtala,” of course, is the music. The film’s hopeful and powerful call reverberates through the songs in the movie. They capture the essence of hope, healing and faith, bringing the message home.
There was a time when inspiring movies were plentiful, but unfortunately, that’s no longer the case. “Sinagtala” producers and director Mike Sandejas deserve praise for their bravery in tackling themes of faith and hope with such sincerity, transforming “Sinagtala” into more than just a film about friendship and music. It’s also a reflection on how faith does not remove the struggles but brings strength through life’s messiest moments.
In today’s critical and superfluous times, “Sinagtala” serves as a soothing melody, like gentle rain washing away the noise.
