Filipino singer Sofronio Vasquez has been crowned the winner of The Voice: USA Season 26, marking a historic moment as the first Asian champion of the popular singing competition. Representing Team Michael Bublé, Vasquez delivered an unforgettable performance of “A Thousand Dreams” in the finale, captivating audiences with his impeccable vocal control, emotional depth, and flawless diction.
“I can’t wait to call my mom and tell her I won ‘The Voice’,” said Sofronio after his victory.
The 32-year-old Mindanao native, who was a former third placer in the Philippines’ Tawag ng Tanghalan, triumphed over four other finalists after earning the highest number of viewer votes.
“Your mentorship is a blessing to me, my family, and to all the dreamers out there,” Vasquez told his coach Michael Bublé moments before his win.
Bublé, who secured his first coaching victory with Vasquez, was the only coach to have two contestants in the final five, with New York teen Shye finishing as the runner-up.
The win not only brought Vasquez a $100,000 cash prize and a record deal with Universal Music Group but also drew admiration from prominent figures like Martin Nievera, the Philippines’ “Concert King.”
“I’ve never had a chance to hear him sing, but he’s all over my feed,” Nievera shared during the “Always and Forever” press event with “Concert Queen” Pops Fernandez. “Siyempre, sobrang proud, di ba? Finally, napapansin talaga ang mga Pilipino for all our talents. It’s nakakahappy talaga. Sofronio’s purpose was to make his country proud, and he did it. He’s not just the first Filipino, he’s the first Asian champion on that stage.”
Nievera revealed that he had been texting Vasquez throughout the competition, offering words of encouragement. “Of the million dreams you have, save one for yourself. You’re already a winner,” he shared.
