THE COVID-19 pandemic has made its unwelcome presence felt in the beauty pageant scene. While some national as well as international pageants have decided to postpone their forthcoming competitions to adhere to protocols and restrictions on mass gatherings, others have found a way to push through with virtual competitions using the digital ZOOM platform and the like.

Miss Philippines Earth led the way having initiated its virtual competitions two weeks ago and has scheduled its series of preliminary events online before the crucial semifinals on July 1 and finals and selection of winners on July 2. The whole (no physical contact) show will be aired on GMA 7 on July 5.

Meanwhile, Queen of Hearts (QOH) Foundation Inc. headed by Mitzie Go-Gil had also proceeded with the virtual competitions of Mrs. Queen of Hearts Philippines beginning with the pre-recorded advocacy and intro videos of the 15 contestants who were judged online by a select group of media people, including this columnist. Viewers will select the most popular videos.

The competitions for national costume, evening gown and talent are scheduled this month and next, with the finals and the selection and coronation of winners on August 30 at the Hilton Hotel Ballroom (depending on the situations by then).

Despite the restrictions affecting pageants, Queen of Hearts Foundation Inc. has continuously carried out its charity missions, giving aid to frontliners as well as to kids and the elderly in various institutions.

Last week, QOH titlist and National Commissioner for Indigenous Peoples Limpayen Sibug Las, a Manobo princess, celebrated her birthday by distributing relief goods from Queen of Hearts Foundation to stranded workers and other passengers at NAIA Terminal 2. She was accompanied by Glynes Evangelista Olbes.

Binibining Pilipinas 2020 has been indefinitely postponed.

Mutya Pilipinas president Cory Quirino, meanwhile, said they are studying the possibilities of going online although broadcast is still the norm.

Miss International and Miss Asia Pacific International have already cancelled their pageant this year and are rescheduling them for next year.
