Miss Earth goes live anew

THE advocacy-driven and Philippines-based Miss Earth Pageant, staged virtually in the last two years because of the pandemic, goes live anew on its 22nd edition, adopting a hybrid platform that combines the preliminary competitions conducted virtually, and the on-ground activities after the 87 delegates worldwide arrived in the country last week leading to the live finals and grand coronation at the Cove Manila in Okada Manila on November 29.

The 87 delegates take on this year’s theme “ME Loves Fauna” to emphasize the importance of caring for animals, whether wildlife or domestic, and especially the endangered species, like essential members of the environment which must be given proper care and attention.

“Aside from this meaningful undertaking, showcasing the beauty of the Philippines to the world as we rise from the pandemic would be beneficial for our tourism industry. The pageant will give more focus on staging events outdoors, showing nature and picturesque landscapes as much as possible, at the same time lessening its carbon footprint with natural lighting,” elaborated Carousel Productions’ executive vice president and Miss Earth co-founder Lorraine E. Schuck.

The 87 delegates wowed members of media as one whole group during the traditional press presentation at Cove Manila last Monday where the delegates from Nigeria, Colombia, Australia and the Netherlands were voted as press favorites from Africa, the Americas, Asia-Oceania and Europe, respectively.

All the delegates then flew to Zamboanga City, which spared nothing to make the beauties’ visit to Asia’s Latin City a most memorable one.

A special swimsuit competition capped the 3-day visit that was hosted by the LGU headed by Mayor John Dalipe.

Lorraine Schuck, herself a native of Zamboanga City, also attended the Zamboanga events.

Twelve ladies were voted to take the top 3 swimsuit winners from the 4 continental groupings namely: Korea, Australia and the Philippines for Asia and Oceania; Colombia, Cuba and Chile from the Americas; Nigeria, Zimbabwe and DR Congo for Africa; and Belarus, Russia and Ireland for Europe.

From Zamboanga, the ladies will travel as 4 groups tagged as Teams Air, Water, Fire and Eco Tourism to various points in the country before returning to Manila for the grand finale where reigning Miss Earth Destiny Wagner from Belize will crown her successor.

The finals will be streamed online and aired on national and international TV stations live on November 29 from Cove Manila beginning at 3 p.m. to capture the sunset on Manila Bay.
