SHERIDAN Mortlock, 22, will represent Australia at the 22nd Miss Earth finals which will be held at Okada Manila on November 29. She hails from Paddington, Sydney, New South Wales and is studying at the University of Wollongong taking up a double degree in Global Sustainability and Politics while, at the same time, working as a model and as an influencer.
Sheridan earned her ticket to the Miss Earth world finals by winning the Miss Earth Australia (MEA). “I joined MEA because fighting for the conservation and protection of our planet is the most significant battle we must overcome,” Sheridan shared. “I’ve always been an advocate for the environment, but this has been further intensified by my university studies. MEA provides an excellent platform to amplify our voices and action as we protect Mother Earth.”
And on to the global platform, Sheridan was among the earliest delegates to arrive for the pageant in Manila, ahead of the November 14 press presentation which will kick off the face-to-face events and competitions that will bring the 90 plus delegates around the archipelago.
“Staying up to date with the ever-evolving issue that is climate change is one of my biggest pastimes,” Sheridan continued. “This year alone I’ve read over 50 articles and books on topics such as coal, environmental government reports, and the social impacts of climate change. With climate impacts being so far-reaching and widespread there is always something new to learn.
“Part of my advocacy for Miss Earth is ‘Education’, and this is something that I firmly stand behind. We can’t act on something that we don’t understand. Ecosystems are like a spider’s web, if you bump one of the strands then it will vibrate onto all those surrounding it. When we do take action, we have to make sure those vibrations are doing more good than harm.”
The Taylor Swift deadringer has also chosen the swift parrot as her fauna for the pageant’s “Miss Earth Loves Fauna” theme, the fastest flying parrot found in the south Australian island of Tasmania where illegal logging has impacted on their breeding habitat, and now in danger of extinction.
Sheridan is vying for Australia’s first ever Miss Earth title. While she is in Manila as an independent candidate in terms of pageant camp affiliations, she is being assisted by ProMedia, headed by power couple Paul Izon Reyes ad Jam Aquino in training with selected trainers for fitness, Q&A, pasarela, etc.
Reyes’ first personal encounter with Sheridan was when he was invited to sit as judge for the MEA finals and awarded her the Best in Swimsuit award on stage as well as her bouquet as the newly crowned Miss Earth Australia.
MEA had been following ProMedia’s activities and accomplishments including the victorious journeys of so-called ProMedia athletes Miss World Philippines Gwendolyne Fourniol and Binibining Pilipinas-Globe Chelsea Fernandez, and thought they could help Sheridan on her Miss Earth journey.
