In the Mother’s Day episode of “CIA with BA,” the story of John Paul and his mother, Nanay Aileen, was featured.
John Paul complained about being kicked out by his stepfather and his feeling that his mother didn’t take his side. According to John Paul, it always seemed like Nanay Aileen sided with his stepfather and siblings. He started a relationship with his partner, but when he lost his job, he decided to move back in with his mother. However, tensions soon escalated, leading to heated arguments.
Nanay Aileen explained that she wanted John Paul to stand on his own because he was already of age. She shared that it was difficult for her to mediate the conflict between her son, her daughters, and her husband. There even came a point where her husband asked her to choose between him and her children.
During their confrontation on the program, John Paul realized his own shortcomings and apologized to his mother.
Senator Alan Peter Cayetano also provided a legal explanation about the parents’ obligation to support their children, clarifying that this responsibility ends at 18.
“Obligasyon ng parents — ng nanay at tatay — suportahan ang kanilang mga anak: edukasyon, pagkain, kalusugan… In fact, makakasuhan ng child abuse [ang magulang] kapag may winithold ka, halimbawa hindi mo pinabakunahan o kaya pinalo mo nang masyadong masakit na na-injure,” he said.
“Having said that, it’s not indefinite. Once you turn 18, support can continue if you’re still studying, but technically, at 18, you’re considered an adult,” added Cayetano.
As part of the support offered by “CIA with BA,” the program promised to assist with their livelihood, but they emphasized they would first like to see the mother and son reconcile before extending further help.
Along with Boy Abunda, Cayetano continues the advocacy of his late father, Senator Rene Cayetano, on “CIA with BA.” It airs every Sunday at 11 p.m. on GMA7, with a replay every Saturday at 10:30 p.m. on GTV.
