After a five-year hiatus since “Maledicto,” Unitel, now rebranded as UxS (Unitel x Straightshooters), is making a return to the big screen with “Mujigae.”
This heartwarming family drama features a dynamic cast, including Korean actor Kim Ji Soo and Filipina actress Alexa Ilacad, along with six-year-old Ryrie Sophia in the title role.
Director Randolph Longjas expressed excitement about the project, comparing the experience to his early filmmaking days. “It’s been a while since I made a full-length film, and honestly, I’m overwhelmed with emotions. This project means a lot to me,” he stated.
Longjas praised Ryrie for her talent, noting that she learned Korean within a month and has the potential to become a drama star.
The film’s narrative centers on the character Mujigae, who is caught between her loving Aunt Sunny, played by Alexa Ilacad, and her biological father, Ji Sung Park, portrayed by Kim Ji Soo. The official trailer has already garnered millions of views, hinting at the emotional journey of love and healing that defines the film. It showcases Sunny grappling with unexpected responsibilities while discovering the joys of life through Mujigae’s eyes.
Producer Madonna Tarrayo emphasized the importance of exploring familial connections in the film. “Family can come from anywhere – friends, co-workers, even pets,” she explained, reflecting on her personal experiences. With “Mujigae,” she said they aim to depict the complexities of relationships and the healing power of love.
As the film prepares for its October 9 release, it aims to resonate emotionally with audiences, offering a mix of humor and heartfelt moments. Longjas wishes viewers – parents, those who want to be parents, even those who do not want kids – will connect deeply with the story.
“Mujigae” also features a supporting cast that includes Richard Quan, Anna Luna, Dona Cariaga, and Rufa Mae Quinto, and is written by Mark Raywin Tome.
It will open exclusively at SM cinemas starting October 9.
