“Silay,” the new film starring veteran actress Malou de Guzman, highlights the government’s “Balik Eskwela si Lolo at Lola” initiative, encouraging seniors to return to school and complete their education.
Directed by Greg Colasito and produced by Rachelle Umandap of Mace Ascending Entertainment Productions, the film centers on themes of resilience, family, and the power of education at any age.
In her first-ever lead role, Malou plays Silay, a grandmother who returns to school after years of working on a farm and caring for her granddaughter, Leslie, portrayed by Francine Diaz. At the film’s premiere at Trinoma Cinema, Malou spoke about the honor of taking on this role, saying, “I’m overjoyed… It’s an affirmation of my long career and a confirmation that I’m doing something right.”
Francine, a promising young actress, shared why she chose the project, noting, “What matters most to me is the lesson the audience takes away. It’s important that they learn from what they watch — that age isn’t a barrier to learning.”
“Silay” follows the titular character’s journey back to school, where she faces the challenges of bullying, the limitations of age, and a tragic twist that alters her path. Through it all, Silay’s determination shines, and the film becomes a tribute to second chances and the power of education.
Alongside Malou and Francine, the cast includes Yul Servo as Mr. Ventura, Emilio Garcia as Armando, Long Mejia as Mang Isko, Ramon Christopher Gutierrez as Cong. Tolledo, Rob Sy as Nimrod, Krista Miller as Miss Mendoza, Merab Soriano as Karen, Russel Umandap as Lance, Jervin Mendoza as Celso, Astra Pimente-Naik as Syulvia, Joni McNab as Melai, Coco Naik as Barrameda,Pau Umandap as Greta, and Rolando Inocencio as Mang Berto, who contribute to the story of a community rallying around Silay’s dream.
