THE well-documented and excellently-prepared public lectures of internationally acclaimed designer Kenneth Cobonpue, curator and author Marian Pastor Roces and curatorial studies senior teacher Clare Carolin may now be viewed on YouTube, through the SCREENINGS program of the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (MCAD).
From Inspiration to Object with Kenneth Cobonpue features the multi-awarded furniture designer and manufacturer, as he shares his journey in transforming ideas into distinct functional pieces of art out of natural local materials such as bamboo, abaca, and rattan. In this talk, he imparts his perspective on noteworthy designs and how young artists can impact the local and international scene.
Cobonpue is the Program Chairperson and Senior Industry Fellow for Industrial Design at the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde.
Revisiting Biennales with Marian Pastor Roces tackles the views of past Biennales and cultural and political institutions. Her essay Nation, Comparison, and the Spectre was highlighted in the catalogue for The Spectre of Comparison, the Philippine participation in the 57th Venice Biennale.
She is the founder and president of TAO, Inc., the sole museum development corporation in the Philippines. An esteemed curator and bestselling author, her critical essays were anthologized in Gathering: Political Writing on Art and Culture, a monograph published by MCAD in 2019.
Platforms: Curating Contemporary Art with Clare Carolin explores curatorial studies and its pedagogies and program structure through the lenses. In this discussion, Carolin elaborates on cultural education and the importance of the course in giving the students opportunity to create different curatorial voices. She likewise tackled the role of the curator in responding to the scheme of representation, the forces of global capitalism and the technological developments.
A senior teacher and former Deputy Head of the Curating Contemporary Art Programme at the Royal College of Art (RCA) in London, she has expertly co-curated MCAD’s exhibition The Surface of the World: Architecture and the Moving Image (2014).
