What started as a casual idea from Manila Mayor Isko Moreno has now turned into a national movement. As National Hopia Day (NHD) returns for its second year, the celebration not only goes nationwide for the first time — it also brings with it the launch of Hopia Etneb.

The idea was first floated last year, at the first National Hopia Day which featured Mayor Isko as guest of honor. In a conversation with Eng Bee Tin COO Gerik Chua, Moreno requested for Hopia Etneb.

“Mayor Isko really pushed for something affordable, something that brings people together,” said Chua. “Hopia Etneb is our response — a quality treat at a price anyone can enjoy.”

Now in its 113th year, Eng Bee Tin releases Hopia Etneb. “Etneb” — a playful reversal of “bente” — reflects not just the price, but the brand’s commitment to making good food available to all.

The celebration itself has expanded far beyond Metro Manila. From July 16 to 20, Cebu will join the festivities through a regional pop-up at Robinsons Galleria, followed by Gaisano Mall Davao from July 23 to 27. “This is the first time National Hopia Day is happening simultaneously in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao,” said Chua. “It’s truly become a nationwide celebration.”

Customers can also enjoy 10% off every Monday in July and a 20% discount during the main NHD weekend this July 18 to 20 at all Eng Bee Tin branches across the country.

Mayor Isko’s return to office has reinvigorated efforts to spotlight Filipino-Chinese community pride. His collaboration with Eng Bee Tin is part of a broader push to make cultural icons more accessible.

“Mayor Isko has always believed in the power of small things to make a big impact,” said Gerick. “Hopia Etneb is simple, but it says a lot — about affordability, unity and honoring our roots.”

Beyond the discounts, there is the Hakot Challenge, where lucky participants can win up to P15,000 worth of products, and debuts exclusive flavors like Chili-Mansi, Kapeng Barako, Sisig, Ube and Salted Egg Pineapple.

“Every hopia tells a story,” said finance manager Roche Chua. “Through National Hopia Day, we celebrate culture, comfort and the delicious flavors of home.”

Operations executive Gerald Chua added, “This is our tribute to the millions of Filipinos who have journeyed with us. They are more than customers — they are family.”
