Marian Rivera once again proves she’s not only one of the country’s finest actresses but also one of its bravest. In GMA Pictures and GMA Entertainment Group’s “Balota,” set for its nationwide release with new cuts on October 16, she showcases an impressive range, stepping into a bold new role.
Directed and written by Kip Oebanda, “Balota” is a timely political drama that blends humor, suspense, and social commentary. The film highlights the power of vigilance and shines a spotlight on the dedication of teachers safeguarding votes during elections. Marian portrays Emmy, a principled teacher who becomes an unlikely heroine when she stands up against corruption in her town, where a land-grabbing tycoon and a former sexy actor are in a heated mayoral race.
Known for her glamorous roles, Marian ventures into new territory with Emmy – a tough, foul-mouthed character whose depth earned her the Cinemalaya 2024 Best Actress award.
Marian’s portrayal captures both vulnerability and strength, marking it as one of her most significant performances to date.
The film’s talented ensemble cast – including Gardo Versoza, Will Ashley, Rahell, Bhyria, Royce Cabrera, Josel Saracho, Nico Antonio, Sue Prado, Donna Cariaga, Mae Paner, Sassa Girl, and Ensnyr – adds much to the film’s balance of drama and comedy.
While “Balota” takes a lighter approach to its narrative, its core message about standing up for what’s right resonates deeply. Watch it this October 16 nationwide.
