The “Woman in Action” series of Gretchen Ho hosted the premiere of “Beyond the Board,” a documentary showcasing the remarkable journey of Margielyn “Margie” Didal, a 25-year-old skateboard sensation. The event was held last June 21 at Powerplant Mall Cinema and drew notable guests who were captivated by Didal’s resilience and dedication.
“Beyond the Board” traces Didal’s path from discovering skateboarding on the streets of Cebu at 12 to her ascent in the international skateboarding scene. Despite starting later than her peers, Didal’s passion grew as she taught herself through observation and online tutorials at local skate parks, supported by coach Dani Bautista.
Overcoming financial constraints and limited training resources, Didal competed against male skateboarders in local events, culminating in her gold medal win at the 2018 Asian Games and subsequent triumphs at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games. Her success not only inspired Filipino youth but also elevated interest in skateboarding nationwide.
The documentary captures Didal’s impact beyond medals, emphasizing her role in fostering community and inspiring young athletes. In her own words, Didal encourages aspiring skateboarders: “If I can do it, you can do it too.” Her journey, from social media clips to the big screen, was a moving experience. Reflecting on the premiere, Didal expressed surprise and gratitude for the emotional depth captured by Gretchen Ho, who, with her background as an athlete, brought authenticity to the storytelling process.
Would she accept a Part 2, a continuation of her journey?
“I’m be down for it,” said Didal eagerly, noting that she wants people to know who the real Margielyn Didal is.
“Beyond the Board” is available for viewing on Cignal TV’s One News and One PH channels, as well as Gretchen Ho’s YouTube page, offering multiple opportunities for audiences to witness Didal’s inspiring story from June 21 to June 23.
