How far would you go to make ends meet while reclaiming your sense of self? For Mack Leigh, the answer is as unconventional as it is inspiring. On January 24, Lionsgate Play presents “Madam,” the bold dramedy that’s grabbing headlines and racking up awards — for good reason.
Inspired by true events, “Madam” shines a spotlight on Mack Leigh, a wife and mother who’s hit rock bottom. Played by Academy Award-nominated Rachel Griffiths, Mack finds herself juggling a philandering husband, crumbling finances, and the very relatable feeling of wanting to reclaim her life. But here’s where the story flips the script — Mack doesn’t wallow or rage. Instead, she takes inspiration from her husband’s infidelity and opens “Sweethearts,” an ethical brothel right in her quaint New Zealand town.
If you’re already shaking your head, don’t worry — Mack’s story is loaded with humor, heart, and just enough chaos to keep you hooked. In fact, the series has already snagged two prestigious international awards: Best Creation at the Monte Carlo TV Festival and Best Comedy Series at the Berlin TV Series Festival. And now, thanks to Lionsgate Play, “Madam” is reaching audiences far beyond its Kiwi roots.
On how she approached playing a character based on a real person (author Antonia Murphy), Rachel Griffiths said in an interview withVariety, “She had an unpublished autobiography that was so helpful. As an actor, you dream of someone to go: ‘Here’s 200 pages of everything that has ever happened.’ I did have dinner with her once, but I didn’t want to do an impersonation. With every character I do, I meet them halfway.”
