John Arcenas channels spirit of April Boy Regino in biopic

From the mole to his signature long hair and cap, actor John Arcenas captured the look of singer April Boy Regino perfectly, bringing the late OPM icon to life in the biopic “Idol: The April Boy Regino Story.” The young actor, a Tyrone Escalante artist, didn’t just look the part — he even sounded like Regino, impressing viewers with both his acting chops and singing skills at the film’s recent premiere at the Great Eastern Hotel in Quezon City.

John, already familiar with April Boy’s music, including hits like “Paano ang Puso,” “Umiiyak ang Puso,” and “’Di Ko Kayang Tanggapin,” took his preparation to another level. He auditioned for the role and made sure to watch old footage, take voice lessons, and undergo a workshop to perfect his portrayal.

“Alam kong big responsibility iyong ibinigay na chance sa akin to portray him kaya naman, hindi lang iyong mga kanta niya ang inaral ko. Nanood din po ako ng videos para maaral ko ang kanyang nuances at mannerisms lalo na iyong pagsusuot niya ng baseball cap,” John shared.

He even wore some of the late singer’s old clothes and, at one point, revealed he felt as if he was “nasapian” by April Boy’s spirit.

Meanwhile, budding actress and designer Kate Yalung, who plays April Boy’s wife Madelyn in the film, has been enjoying her showbiz journey. She feels fortunate to be given such an important role in “Idol” and is grateful to be paired with John.

“Idol” chronicles April Boy Regino’s humble beginnings, his rise to fame in the 1990s, and his health challenges. The heartfelt drama is meant to inspire viewers to continue dreaming and striving, no matter the obstacles.

Actor-director Efren Reyes, Jr. is proud of the project and hopes that viewers will take home April Boy’s powerful message. In a video taken when he was already blind, Regino shared, “Pantay pantay tayong lahat. Walang mayaman, walang mahirap,” echoing the movie’s themes of humility and strength in the face of adversity.

“Idol: The April Boy Regino Story,” produced by Marynette Gamboa of WaterPlus Productions, also stars Rey PJ Abellana, Tanya Gomez, Dindo Arroyo, Irene Celebre, with special participation by JC Regino and the introduction of Jaudencio Yago. The film will open in cinemas on November 27.
