David Chua and his giant goals

David Chua is currently balancing his role as the lead star of the sitcom “GoodWill” on Net25 with his political ambitions as a candidate for councilor in the second district of Tondo, Manila.

The actor, who has been active in showbiz for over 17 years, admits that he didn’t actively seek out a political career. “Hindi ko lang mawari ba’t ako napunta dito. Hindi ko naman to pinilit,” he says. Despite this, he is fully committed to his candidacy. However, David is not overly focused on the outcome. “Hindi naman ako takot na matalo, mas takot ako manalo,” he explains with a chuckle. He recognizes that a victory would come with significant responsibility. “Pag nanalo ka, simula na ‘yon, simula na totoo.”

David’s decision to run for councilor stems from his personal experiences and desire to make a positive impact on his community. He was born and raised in Tondo, an area often associated with poverty and crime. “Dapat baguhin natin yung imahe ng Tondo. Tondo should be something to be proud of,” he asserts.

A key aspect of his campaign is improving the tourism sector in Tondo. David believes that Tondo has much to offer in terms of food, art, and culture, and he hopes to bring more attention to these local assets. “Maraming masarap na pagkain dyan, may sining, mga arts. Bigyan mo lang ng tutok ‘yan, ng promotion, pupuntahan ng tao,” he says.

David attributes his decision to enter politics to personal hardships, particularly the death of his mother in 2021. “Parang ako’y nag-iisa dito,” he recalls, noting the emotional and financial challenges he faced following her passing.

This experience motivated him to create an organization to help those in need in his district, which has grown to over 11,000 volunteers. David’s Dayaman sa Distrito Dos has provided medical and financial support to local residents, including donations of rice, wheelchairs, and other necessities.

Despite the political focus, David is continuing his work in entertainment. “GoodWill” is his own concept and features him with comedian Bayani Agbayani, who is running as second nominee for Tupad party-list, and award-winning actor Raymond Bagatsing, who, incidentally, is a mayoral candidate in Manila.

“Hindi ko pinangarap na maging superstar. Pinangarap ko na maging character actor na hanggang umabot ang otsenta kung buhay pa ako,” David shares.

David is aware of the challenges that come with running for office, including financial pressures, but he is firm in his commitment to serve his community, regardless of the outcome of the election.

Whether or not he secures a council seat, Chua’s dual focus on acting and community service will continue, he vows.

“Lalaban ako all the way,” he says.
