In honor of Gaita Fores

Tributes poured in for the celebrated chef following news of her passing last Tuesday.

Margarita “Gaita” Forés, a trailblazer in the culinary world who brought both Italian and Filipino cuisine to new heights, passed away at the age of 65 last Tuesday. Renowned for her unwavering passion for authentic flavors, dedication to sustainability, and efforts in putting Filipino cuisine on the global map, Chef Gaita left behind a remarkable legacy that will continue to inspire chefs and food enthusiasts alike.

This was Chef Myke Tatung Sarthou’s “Simpol” tribute to her. “The culinary world is mourning the loss of a true icon, Gaita Forés.

The passionate advocate of Filipino cuisine and an inspiration to so many leaves behind a legacy that will continue to shape the industry for generations.

Gaita’s artistry, dedication, and love for food were unparalleled.

Rest in peace, Gaita. You are loved and will always be remembered.”

Multi-awarded international media anchor Rico Hizon posted: “Very sad news. Gaita was one of the most accomodating and friendliest guests I’ve ever had. She was so passionate about Filipino food and promoting it to the world. You will be missed. Her legacy lives on. Our deepest sympathies Amado and to the whole family on the sudden passing of your mom.  We will always remember her with fondness. May she rest in peace.”

Similiary. feisty anchor of “Talkback” and ANC Newcast Karmina Constantino said, “She was a hero to many of us – for the many feats she conquered with such grace and joy, for the many feasts she created with such passion and love. She was my hero for all of these but most especially for this: for always catching and holding my gaze with her kind and soulful eyes, when a hero of such greatness could’ve easily looked away. Rest in Heaven’s delights, Tita Gaita.”

In showbusiness, Gaita had many supporters and fans like us. Singer-actress Agot Isidro had this to say. “Tukayo, Thank you for nourishing us with your kindness, generosity and lightness. You will be missed.”

Director Chris Martinez enumerated things that Gaita created that stuck with him, “Lusso’s Lobster Lasagna. A Mano’s Burrata Gelato. Cibo in Aura is the official extension of my kitchen. Memorable meals. Unforgettable dishes. A true artist.”

Madonna Tarrayo, president of Unitel exclaimed, “What a sad day! Cibo is our go-to resto. My daughter and I used to go to Glorietta all the time. Our favorite is Penne Al Telefono. And just last week, our UXS team was in Grace Park, another favorite. We will terribly miss you, Chef! I am a huge fan.”

Film Developmeng Council of the Philippines Chair Jose Javier Reyes called for “prayers for the eternal rest of one of the pioneers of modern gastronomy in our country.  You have left your mark in our restaurant culture, Gaita!”

Matteo Guidicelli, who was Gaita’s travel food show co-host in “The Crawl Italy,” aired on Metro Channel, posted this heartfelt tribute: “Ciao Tita, you will be deeply missed. We shared so many special moments together, and I will always be grateful for your encouragement and motivation, especially in the restaurant business. You were not just a mentor but a true friend – always a joy to be with. You will always and forever be the best!!! You will always be in our hearts! We love you very much! Chin-chin Tita! Rest in peace.”

And finally, coming from the memorable Gordon Ramsay experience where Gaita toured Gordon to the Farmers Market, celebrity chef and hailed as the “Queen of Philippine Soap Opera” and the “Prime Superstar” Judy Ann Santos said, ““Heaven gained a talented and inspiring angel. You will never be forgotten chef.”

Your food, your kindness, your national pride will continue to comfort and inspire us. Thank you and Godspeed, Gaita!
