IN A vibrant celebration of Chinese-Filipino culture, talented performers from across the country are coming together for the “Lion and Dragon Dance Competition” taking place at GH Mall this Sunday, January 19.
The event’s primary goal is to celebrate the Chinese-Filipino heritage through lion and dragon dancing, with a particular focus on blending traditional Chinese routines with Filipino influences, said Gaius Uy, one of the event organizers. “At the same time, gusto namin pakita na very talented ang mga Pinoy and Chinoy,” he said.
This year’s competition will feature high-level acrobatics and creative performances. “Well, we try our best to give the best. We are bringing in different teams to showcase different talents,” explained Gauis. “Acrobatics also are at a different level. We’re very excited to see new dances and routines.”
The teams participating will perform traditional lion and dragon dances, with the addition of unique elements that reflect Filipino dance styles.
In line with the tradition of lion and dragon dances as symbols of prosperity and good fortune, the event will feature a P100,000 cash prize for the winning team. “Since lion dance and dragon dance is about spreading fortune and prosperity, we thought that cash prize will be the best prize talaga,” said Gauis. “It’s also to encourage the different teams to continue the craft.”
Several dance teams from around the country will compete, performing routines featuring intricate lion and dragon costumes. While the core of the performance will be based on traditional Chinese techniques, teams will incorporate Filipino influences in their movements and choreography. “The different performances will feature traditional Chinese routines with lion and dragon costumes. While it’s primarily Chinese influence, makikita din natin how we are able to bring in the Filipino style in doing these dances,” he added.
Judges will assess the performances based on a number of factors, including the execution of the routines, creativity, the difficulty of acrobatics, and overall stage presence. “Like all performances, the execution of the routines will be judged,” said the organizer. “We will also factor in creativity, the difficulty of acrobatics involved, and the overall stage presence.”
In addition to the competition, audience members will have the opportunity to engage with the performers through meet-and-greet sessions and workshops. “We aim to create an enjoyable atmosphere for everyone,” Gauis noted. “It’s not just about watching the competition; we want the audience to feel a part of the celebration.”
The event, being mounted by GH Mall, Pawchester and Huang Lion Dance Group, is open to the public. “We encourage everyone to come watch and support the lion and dragon dance competition here at GH Mall,” said Gauis.
