‘The lovely twist in the end is a nice touch. No doubt, the audience will go out feeling hopeful and satisfied’
Viva Films’ “Sa Muli,” written and directed by Fifth Solomon, took five years before it arrived at the big screen. Happily, the movie is worth the wait.
Starring Xian Lim and Ryza Cenon, “Sa Muli” tackles reincarnation and undying love. It takes viewers to the 1900s, the 1950s, the present and 40 years into the future. The film also had its own years-long journey. From writing the story in 2018 to having a press con in 2020, the film had to contend with the complication of the Taal eruption – the story was set there and of course, the COVID pandemic. Ryza also took a maternity leave and had to take care of her son and get back into the groove before the shooting continued.
In spite of all these, Solomon was able to craft a touching movie that is beautiful and hopeful. Xian was consistent all throughout the film. Being the one who retained all his other characters’ memory, he was able to effectively show fear, frustration, hopelessness and vulnerability as the bumbling Victor, the suave Nicolas, and the nerdy Pep.
Meanwhile, Ryza’s character goes through a lot of changes – she is the shy Aurora of the 1900s, the charming Belen in the 1950s and the wild Elly in the present.
The lovely twist in the end is a nice touch. No doubt, the audience will go out feeling hopeful and satisfied.
“Sa Muli” is now showing in theaters nationwide.
