No longer above the law

THE PNP should pursue cases against the cops involved in the drug operations that led to the killing of seven suspects in Davao City. The drug entrapment and encounters came after city Mayor Baste Duterte ordered a drug war in his city which he probably thinks should resemble his father’s brutal drug offensives.

The alleged rubout of the seven drug suspects are fresh cases that have apparently revived the constitutional commitments of the police and justice leadership for the law’s supremacy. President Bongbong Marcos, who has clearly exhibited a more compassionate and humane drug campaign, would certainly have nothing to do with incidents of cold-blooded executions of drug suspects. He seems determined not to allow his administration to be besmirched with the blood of victims of drug salvaging.

Easter’s truly deep meaning for the genuine followers of Christ is to live out His resurrection power and to overcome sickness, pain, failures, depression, disappointments and despair. People who have relished power, authority, wealth and fame for many years could not cope and seemed to die miserably and forlorn.

The highly popular comedian, Bert “Tawa” Marcelo, plunged into politics and ran for governor of Bulacan. The surveys had put him well ahead of the then-incumbent Roberto Pagdanganan. His friends and countless followers had donated a very hefty sum for his campaign.

Marcelo suffered a stunning loss and his family said he never recovered from the shock of losing what he and many in Bulacan thought was certain victory at the polls. Two years later, the jolly Bert “Tawa”, who had turned reclusive and ailing, suffered a massive and fatal stroke.

And who could forget the ordeal of the king of Philippine movies, Fernando Poe Jr.? He had publicly rejected repeated calls for him to run for president but was prevailed upon by his best friend, Joseph “Erap” Estrada. The latter was in jail facing plunder charges after being ousted from Malacanang.

FPJ ran against the incumbent Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, who was caught in a recorded conversation with a Comelec commissioner for the “delivery” of two million votes. The extremely popular “King,” who enjoyed more favorable surveys than GMA, lost by over a million votes.

FPJ despaired over the reported massive election fraud, especially in Mindanao, which, to him, was horribly unjust and terribly shocking. It was also extremely difficult for him to accept that someone like him who was virtually adored and practically venerated by millions would go down in defeat and humiliation.

He would also confront reports of the betrayal of friends, advisers and followers in exchange for huge sums of money. In December of 2004, the once virile and very able FPJ suffered a major stroke and passed away.

The highly esteemed Salvador “Doy” Laurel was vice president and foreign affairs secretary during the Cory Aquino administration. He became disgruntled with the governance of Aquino and the return of corruption in government and eventually resigned from the Cabinet.

Under the next administration of President Fidel Ramos, Laurel’s name was dragged into the scandal-ridden multi-billion-peso construction of a trade and tourism building. Along with other public officials, he became the subject of a Senate probe and was subsequently indicted for graft and malversation. He vehemently and repeatedly denied the charges.

There were speculations that he became the object of a demolition job because he reportedly refused to take part in bribery and extortion that heavily attended the massive project. He became quite depressed and developed a heart ailment that led to a fatal heart attack about three years after the cases were filed against him.

The following are accounts of two more unexplained deaths within the last month. One was the mother of one of my mass communication students at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila. Only 56 years old, the mother suddenly suffered heart failure, the cause of which the doctors could not explain.

The other was the aunt of a church Bible study leader who was gripped with pneumonia that rapidly progressed and which the doctors could not reverse. Her family was very dissatisfied with the diagnosis and the failure to revive her. Several doctor-relatives claim these and other cases of mysterious deaths apparently point to the ongoing fatal consequences of COVID-19 vaccinations.
