There is a plan, said Sen. Lito Lapid, for him and his colleagues in the senate, Sen. Robin Padilla, Sen. Jinggoy Estrada, and Sen. Bong Revilla, to produce and star in a film that will be for the benefit of film workers.

Sen. LITO LAPID

Do you know that Senator Lito Lapid has been a public servant for close to three decades?

At a special pre-Valentine get-together and kumustahan with members of the entertainment press last Monday, January 23, at Max’s Scout Tuason, he revealed that he will be marking his thirtieth year in public service in 2025. However, showbiz will always remain in his heart.

“Hindi ko makalimutan ang showbiz kasi dyan ko binuhay ang pamilya ko,” he said. “Pero sa pulitika, pagkatapos ng term ko, thirty years na akong naglilingkod sa ating mga kababayan.

“Three terms na ako sa senado, three terms ako as governor, isang term as vice governor,” Sen. Lito related. ’Tuluy-tuloy ako, so parang 27 years na ako sa pulitika. Another three years sa 2025, thirty years na.”

He believes actor-director Coco Martin was instrumental in the revival of his popularity among the younger population.

He made a name in the local entertainment industry as an action hero from mid-1970s up to the 1990s. He parlayed his fame by running for office in 1992. He became vice governor in his native Pampanga, before becoming governor, and later senator.

Sen. Lito thinks his inclusion in the highly popular “FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano,” a series featuring Coco as actor and director, that led to his return to the senate.

Now, he is part of Coco’s new series, “Batang Quiapo,” another TV adaptation of a Fernando Poe, Jr. blockbuster.

“Ako raw ang hari ng mandurukot, parang supremo,” said Sen Lito.

Politics had not been in his mind in the beginning, said Sen. Lito. He did not plan to be a senator, and will not even dare think of running for higher office, even if he is egged by some quarters to throw his hat in the presidential ring.

“Hindi ako nangangarap ng higit pa,” he said.

He knows his strengths, and he certainly knows his limitations. Aside from continuing his work in public service, he and his fellow senators – Robin Padilla, Bong Revilla, Jinggoy Estrada – have taken it upon themselves to help the industry they love the most – showbiz – by cooking up a movie that will benefit the small workers in the industry.

His proposal is for Sen. Jinggoy to produce a movie with all four of them in the cast, plus the likes of Cesar Montano and Phillip Salvador, for the benefit of the movie industry workers.

“Ang tawag sa amin ‘Apat na Sikat’,” he said.

“Ang sabi ko wag tayong magpabayad. Ibigay na lang natin ang kita sÄ… movie industry, sa mga stuntmen, sa mga walang kinikita para may foundation,” he continued.

It would be good if the movie becomes an entry in a film festival.

“Mas maganda maging halimbawa kami at tumulong sa ibang producers, tutal may trabaho naman kami. Para magkaroon ng trabaho ang mga stuntmen at ibang artista.”

And the director he is eyeing is none other than his “Probinsyano” and “Batang Quiapo” director Coco Martin.

“Sabi nya, baka hindi eko paniwalaan ng mga ito,” he recounted Coco’s reaction.

He assured him that his fellow senators will.

“Paniniwalaan ka ng mga ‘yan. Kasi mas sikat ka sa amin,” Sen. Lito recalled telling the younger action superstar. “Tsaka bata ka. Walang makikialam sa amin para walang selosan.”
