‘I’m not closing my mind to the idea. — Sam Concepcion’

SAM CONCEPCION

SAM Concepcion won in the “Little Big Star” singing contest in 2006, where he bested Charice Pempengco who is now Jake Zyrus. He just turned 30 years old on October 17, which means he’s been in showbiz for 14 years now.

He just renewed his contract with Viva Artist Agency, which he joined in 2018 when he did “Miss Granny” with Sarah Geronimo. He’s very talented as he sings, dances, do hosting, act in movies, TV series and theater musicals, how come his career has not really peaked?

“It depends on what kind of measuring you are doing. But if you say I haven’t reached my peak, then that’s a good thing. Kasi after you’ve peaked then there’s nowhere else to go and I strongly feel that I have so much more to give. Honestly, I feel that I’m now in the best position that I’ve ever been.”

Someone says he lacks sex appeal and looks so sanitized, so maybe he should redefine his career. How about trying sexy flicks for Vivamax?

“Going sexy? I’m not closing my mind to the idea. But it will all depend on how good the material is, who will direct it. If it’s done right, I’m willing to act and do it.”

What he wants to do is more concerts. “My music will never go away as it is in my core. But I also enjoy doing movies and I hope we can do more movies being shown in theaters. I want to do good dramas or even maybe try doing action films. Marami pa akong gusto gawin at ma-achieve.”

“Mamasapano, Now It Can be Told” is an entry in the Metro Manila Film Festival. It’s a true account of the deadly clash in Maguindanao that killed 44 members of the Special Action Forces (SAF) of the PNP in 2015.

It’s a secret operation called Oplan Exodus and it aims to get rid of three terrorists, but something went terribly wrong in its execution. The film will show what really happened. The well-researched script is written by Eric Ramos, directed by Lester Dimaranan, produced by the fearless Atty. Ferdinand Topacio for his Borracho Films.

“Ito ang pinakamahirap na script na sinulat ko kasi hindi ka puedeng basta mag-imbento and we had to do a lot of research,” says Ramos. “The primary source of the movie is the report made by the PNP Board of Inquiry led by Gen. Benjamin Magalong, which is very thorough. The movie is a war movie as it shows ‘yung pakikipaglaban ng PNP sa terrorists, and also a procedural as it goes to establish who’s really culpable sa mga nangyari.”

Atty. Topacio says the movie sticks to facts and this is not fiction.

“We didn’t do it to put anyone in a bad light. We just want the truth to come out. It was a long hard battle for this movie kasi we entered it in 2020 as a script and it was rejected. But now, we thank the MMFF committee as it is an official entry in the coming December filmfest.”

To make the movie a good watch for viewers, Eric anchors it on three major characters.

“The movie has a very big cast kasi sa SAF pa lang, 44 na sila. But the top members of the cast are Edu Manzano as Gen. Magalong, Paolo Gumabao as Supt. Raymond Train na head ng Seaborn Company, the main assault team, and Aljur Abrenica as Lt. Franco, ang intelligence officer ng grupo.”
