A CEO for President

I HAVE been hankering for a CEO-as-President ever since we adopted the post-Marcos Constitution in 1987.

By CEO-as-President, I mean an individual who will treat all Filipinos the way a company CEO treats all shareholders, to which he is accountable. Of course, there are great CEOs and there are jackasses too but I think the number of the former in comparison to the latter is higher among CEOs, while the opposite is true among politicians.

I guess you get my drift — I am just sick and tired of most political types in this country. A few still keep me hoping that things will change for the better, but many (including some I know) make me feel I’m an idiot to feel this way.

Which is why I’d dump a politician for a CEO anytime.

‘I want a CEO-as-President who will consciously improve the value of the ‘shares’ we hold as citizens and stockholders of the Philippines.’

In 1992, I campaigned for the agriculturist-industrialist instead of the bevy of politicians because I felt we needed someone who understood best the agri and industry side of our economy because that’s where we needed to grow. But Fidel Ramos won, which was also a “change in scenery” in a way, and for a while, it seemed things would get better.

In 2010, I campaigned for another businessman again for the CEO-as-President reason, but President Cory Aquino died and the rest is history.

I hope I live long enough to campaign for one last one.

I want a CEO-as-President who will consciously improve the value of the “shares” we hold as citizens and stockholders of the Philippines. One who will tell me how things are as he takes office and how he will transform the country and make all of us far “wealthier” when his term ends.

One who will take to heart his accountability to every shareholder — you and me. Who will be focused and determined and inspiring but who will never lose touch with the millions who make up the base of his country-as-corporation shareholders.

Forgive me for being an idiot but I want a CEO-as-President. Is anyone interested in helping me find one?
