Passenger traffic at seaports across the country during Undas this year, was down by 43 percent to 1.08 million passengers as compared to the same period last year with 1.54 million passengers due to the aftermath of Typhoon Kristine according to the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA).
In a statement, PPA said several factors may have contributed to this decrease. For one, the longer weekend holiday in 2023 likely led to an increased number of travelers compared to this year. Additionally, the aftermath of Typhoon Kristine may have caused some seaport passengers to delay or reschedule their trips.
Among the Port Management Offices (PMOs) with the highest passenger traffic, this year were PMO Bohol, with 126,532 total passengers, followed by PMO Davao with 123,290, PMO Negros Oriental/Siquijor 116,087, PMO Batangas 103,858 and PMO Negros Occidental/Bacolod/ Banago Bredco with 100,194 passengers.
From October 28 to November 4, 2024, PPA recorded the highest number of passengers on November 3, with a total of 175,300 passengers.
The PPA’s proactive information dissemination and 24/7 communication via social media also played a key role in keeping the public informed about trip cancellations, port statuses, and updates on the agency’s support for government relief operations.
Despite the challenging weather conditions, the PPA organized simple yet festive “Trick or Treat” activities at various ports to bring some cheer to travelers. PPA staff handed out treats and candies, and several PMOs set up Halloween-themed photo booths for passengers wishing to capture a fun souvenir. The initiative was warmly received by both children and adults alike, offering a bit of joy while waiting for their trips.
