The Philippines is set to collaborate with Denmark and other concerned maritime stakeholders in establishing green shipping corridor in the country, Department of Transportation said in a statement yesterday.

Recently, Department of Transportation undersecretary for Maritime, Elmer Francisco Sarmiento and Danish Ambassador to the Philippines Franz-Michael Mellbin have officially signed the Letter of Intent (LOI) for the participation of the Philippines in Green Shipping Corridor project.

Prior to this, the Philippines has been selected by the US and Danish governments as one of the nations to participate in the said project.

Maersk Mckinney Moller Center will lead the conduct of feasibility study on green corridors or shipping routes dedicated to vessels that run exclusively on alternative fuels.

Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) administrator Sonia Malaluan and Shipyards Regulation Service Director Ramon Hernandez attended the ceremony, as they showed their support in enhancing and promoting marine environment protection particularly decarbonization of ships.

The 2023 IMO Strategy on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships represents a framework for Member States, setting out the future vision for international shipping, the levels of ambition to reduce GHG emissions and guiding principles; and includes candidate mid- and long-term further measures with possible timelines and their impacts on States.

It also identifies barriers and supportive measures including capacity building, technical cooperation and research and development (R&D).

Last year, Marina and the government of the Kingdom of Denmark, through its Danish Maritime Authority, had jointly organize a regional conference which aims to facilitate discussions and explore sustainable practices and possible areas of cooperation in green shipping in the maritime industry for the Asia and the Pacific Region.

The collaboration between the Philippines and Denmark emphasizes their shared commitment to promoting environmental sustainability and advancing the adoption of green shipping practices in the region.

The conference will provide a platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and the development of effective strategies to harness green shipping opportunities.
