SHELL Philippines Exploration B.V. (SPEX), operator of the Malampaya gas-to-power project, assured it will continue supplying up to 40 percent of Luzon’s power needs to sustain operations of hospitals and vital facilities.
The company said it coordinated with the Department of Energy in ferrying critical personnel to the offshore platform, as well as the materials and supplies to safely operate and maintain the facility.
“We’ve taken measures to ensure we can keep the offshore platform and the onshore gas plant staffed even with the current, difficult circumstances… Our commitment to the country remains, our operations will work round-the-clock to produce Malampaya natural gas and power up to 40 percent of Luzon’s electricity,” said Don Paulino, SPEX managing director and general manager.
Paulino said engineers, operators and maintenance crew are regularly rotated and flown offshore to the Malampaya platform. Stringent measures are in place to look after the health and well-being of the workforce by screening workers and implementing specific COVID-19 protocols for hygiene and social distancing measures offshore as well as medical evacuation.
The Malampaya gas field is a very strategic t as it currently provides fuel to power plants with a combined capacity of more than 3,000
