Indonesia’s trade surplus narrows

JAKARTA- Indonesia’s trade surplus is forecast to have narrowed last month to $2.21 billion as exports likely slowed sharply amid weak global demand, while imports probably grew at a much slower pace, a Reuters poll showed on Friday.

The median forecast in the poll, which surveyed 10 economists between Dec. 9 and Dec. 13, was for a trade surplus of $2.21 billion, down from $2.47 billion surplus in October.

Indonesia, the largest economy in Southeast Asia, has been booking monthly surpluses since mid-2020, but they have been narrowing due to lower global demand.

Exports in November were projected to have risen 4.92 percent year-on-year, far lower than the 10.25 percent gain in the previous month. Imports last month were seen expanding 6.15 percent on an annual basis, after annual growth of 17.49 percent in October.
