International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) said that it has added a cold storage facility in its Ecuador operation, Contecon Guayaquil at the Port of Guayaquil, to enhance Ecuador’s banana export capabilities.

The company however failed to reveal how much it spent for the facility.

“Our cold storage facility not only transforms the way we export but also sets a new standard in the logistics industry. We will continue driving Ecuador to be synonymous with excellence in fresh produce exports,” said Javier Lancha, Contecon Guayaquil chief executive officer (CEO) in a statement.

The Guayaquil Banana Gateway is the first on-dock cold storage facility in the country — the world’s top banana exporter.

Developed in partnership with Cool Carriers, the facility ensures uninterrupted cold chain preservation from cargo reception to shipment leading to reduced waiting times, optimized processes and a guarantee that the fruits reach their destinations in the best possible condition, ICTSI said.

“This latest investment reflects Contecon Guayaquil’s commitment to innovation and first-rate customer service, reinforcing its leadership in the local port logistics sector and Ecuador’s position as a benchmark for quality in Latin America,” the company said.

In close proximity to export zones, Contecon Guayaquil is the largest multipurpose terminal within the world’s largest banana-exporting port. The port and approach channel is being expanded to service new-Panamax class vessels, and a USD 1 billion highway with port access roads is being built.

CGSA, the largest and most comprehensive terminal in Ecuador, is the preferred port of call due to its proximity to main export regions and accessibility to the capital of Quito.

With Ecuador being the world’s largest exporter of bananas – amounting to $2.6 billion annually, CGSA plays an essential role in supporting this trade, having the largest reefer infrastructure in Ecuador and being within 250km to main banana farms.
