The Department of Agriculture (DA) said they are eyeing the rehabilitation of the General Santos fish port complex.

DA Secretary William Dar said General Santos fish port supplies 75 percent of tuna in the country. It also the second largest facility after Navotas fish port complex which is currently being rehabilitated.

Glen Pangapalan, general manager of the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority, said the feasibility study on the project has been submitted to the National Economic Development Authority for approval.

Dar recommended additional berthing areas within the port to accommodate more fishing vessels to dock.

He said tuna is a very important commodity contributing to the total gross value-added coming from the fishery sector.

He also cited the need to tap more investors in canneries and other postharvest facility systems.

The port has seven canneries to date.
