The Marcos administration is committed to strengthening and improving the sea cruise industry in the country through better infrastructures, and the streamlining of processes and operations, among others, President Marcos Jr. said on Monday.

The President committed to the Seatrade Cruise (STC) Asia 2024 held at the Okada Manila in Parañaque City as he acknowledged the Philippines’ being recognized as Asia’s best Cruise destination and Best Port call in 2023.

“This achievement, shared with the global community at Seatrade Cruise Asia 2024, stands as a testament to every Filipino that the tourism industry we’ve built together creates real opportunities for our people. With every cruise ship that docks, we open doors to quality jobs, empower local businesses and drive growth in communities across the country. The Bagong Pilipinas we are building affords every Filipino to stand proud—knowing that every traveler leaves our shores with countless reasons to Love the Philippines,” Marcos said.

He said that in 2023, more than 100 cruise calls had been made in the country and it is expected that at least 109 cruise calls to multiple destinations in the Philippines would be made between this year and 2027.

He said that with this in mind, “the government’s goal is to build an industry that benefits everyone: the cruise lines and its crew members, the local communities, and the travelers who seek to explore the rich diversity of the cultures”.

The President said the government is strengthening infrastructure, forging meaningful partnerships, and ensuring that both the cruise industry and local communities flourish.

“By streamlining operations, enhancing efficiencies, and focusing on sustainable practices, we aim to ensure that the cruise industry grows in a way that is both practical and inclusive. The Philippines has long been a gateway to the rich history and culture of Southeast Asia. Now, with your collaboration and commitment, we establish ourselves as a hub for cruise tourism—a destination where innovation, collaboration, and sustainable growth converge,” he said.

Marcos said that with at least 40 unique destinations welcoming cruise ships, from the coasts of Palawan to the streets of Manila, the Philippines offer experiences that echo beyond the shores and resonate with every traveler.

“The journey ahead will require all of us to work very hard together, with dedication, foresight, and with purpose. As we continue to move forward with the same vision and determination that have brought us here today, I do not doubt that the Philippines will succeed in the global cruise tourism industry,” he said.

The President said part of the National Tourism Development Plan of 2023 to 2028 are programs and projects that would modernize our ports, enhance guest experiences, and streamline entry processes.

He said the government also recently launched the Cruise Visa Waiver Program which is an example of “how we are transforming our policies to welcome visitors with open arms and with open doors.”

He said the Philippines has also been collaborating with its regional partners to strengthen the tourism industry, as well as with the local communities to preserve the cultural and environmental assets that make the tourism and cruise destinations distinctive.

Marcos said the government has also released Executive Order No. 55 this year which launched the Maritime Industry Authority’s (MARINA) Blockchain-Enabled Certification System, enacted the Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers, and commenced the development of Ladderized Maritime Education and Training to improve the maritime industry and experience in the country.

The STC Asia 2024, hosted by the Department of Tourism, focuses on expanding Asia’s potential as a cruise tourism destination and market by bringing together global and regional stakeholders including itinerary planners, port agents, cruise associations, cruise line executives, and government officials to discuss growth, challenges, and opportunities in the cruise and maritime industries.
