The value of HRBP
Teleperformance Philippines vice president for Human Resources and Communication & Marketing Rachel Cacabelos recently shared her insights on human resource business partners and to empower HR practitioners to go beyond the traditional HR role.
In the recent 677th General Members Meeting of the People Management Association of the Philippines, Cacabelos served as a panelist and defined the HR business partner role and discussed the value they can bring to an organization.
Human resource business partner (HRBP) as described by Cacabelos, is a human resource person “actually getting to know the business versus just getting to know the employee or personnel side of it, thus you transcend into a business partner.”
More than administrative, HRBPs are more strategic and advisory and involves more decision-making in the company alongside business leaders. HRBPs “provide value to the business, not only from an employee or personnel side, but really adding value to the business in terms of the numbers and finances,” according to Cacabelos.
Cacabelos described HR practitioners as “firefighters” and oftentimes will be pulled back by their HR generalist role versus their HRBP function.

Maynilad programs now benefit 3.2M Filipinos
West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services Inc. has reached some 3.2 million Filipinos with its “water for the poor” programs that seek to provide sustainable water access to marginalized communities.
These programs–which include “Samahang Tubig ng Maynilad” and “Pag-asa sa Tubig Partnership”, among other initiatives–involve connecting urban poor households to the network and organizing marginalized communities into cooperatives that can manage the water system in their respective areas.
“These communities no longer need to get their supply from unsanitary sources and illegal water retailers. Not only does this improve their living conditions, but it also helps to avert practices like illegally connecting to the pipe system, which can affect water pressure and supply availability,” said Maynilad Customer Experience and Retail Operations head Christopher J. Lichauco.
Prior to getting a Maynilad connection, these residents had to spend around P40 per 200-liter drum for their daily water needs. Under Maynilad’s subsidized rates, poor communities only spend around P2.38 per drum (or 1 centavo per liter).
Maynilad offers flexible, long-term payment schemes for the water service application of low-income households.
Program beneficiaries are also given skills training, with some of these communities now earning their livelihood as accredited manufacturers of hygiene and cleaning supplies.
The company implements its pro-poor water programs with support from non-government organizations “E&V Water and Life Philippines” and “Tubig Pag-asa.”
Stricter eKYC system sought
Lucky 8 Star Quest, one of the seven accredited eSabong operators, has denounced the growing number of illegal game operations and is now pushing for more regulation with the introduction of a stricter verification system, to address public outcry about the so-called ‘social costs’ of the game.
Aside from the current regulations from the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), Lucky 8 Star Quest has proposedthe introduction of the Electronic Know-Your-Client (eKYC) process, where players will be authenticated prior to acceptance.
According to Lucky 8 Star Quest Risk and Compliance manager Rommel Cruz, through the eKYC, prospective players will be required to submittheir basic information, recent photo, valid government ID, and sources of income to register. Authentication through a video call verification and an anti-money laundering screening will be put in place. Stringent crosschecking of photos and information declared will be implemented.
The procedures also apply to players who register onsite, as in the case of off-cockpit betting operators.
eKYC data are digitally recorded and stored in the company’s central database and remain secure.
Jade Gaming Entertainment and Gaming Technologies, another eSabong accredited operator, through Chief Executive Officer Joe Pisano proposedthe same and stated that companies are willing to work with the government and lawmakers to help regulate the game better.
The eSabong industry generated around P640 million a month in early 2022 with a total of P2.03 billion in the first half of the year, according to PAGCOR Chairman and Chief Executive Andrea Domingo.
A total of P5 billion is estimated to be lost revenue due to the ban with losses expected to increase in the months to come until a new and effective regulation is adopted.
