SM Prime has established itself as a leading champion in the global movement for cleaner seas and oceans, embracing environmental stewardship as a core part of its corporate identity.
The company’s commitment to its Net Zero 2040 emissions reduction initiative extends beyond protecting coastal ecosystems to inspiring Filipinos to adopt sustainable lifestyles.
In 2024, SM’s mall cleanup initiatives collected and diverted 157,425 kilograms of trash from seas, oceans, and other waterways, significantly reducing impact on marine biodiversity and helping preserve marine ecosystems.

SM addresses the solid waste crisis because it pollutes waters and contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. Landfills containing organic and plastic waste emit methane, a greenhouse gas more destructive than carbon dioxide in accelerating climate change.
The company’s advocacy success stems from cooperation among its business units, extending cleanup initiatives from coastal areas to smaller water channels like rivers and esteros. Hundreds of employees and thousands of volunteers ensure extensive, impactful efforts.

SM partners with government agencies, local governments and international organizations, including the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, local government units and Ocean Conservancy for the annual International Coastal Cleanup.
The 2024 International Coastal Cleanup marked SM’s 10th consecutive year of participation and its largest to date, with 15 SM malls nationwide and 23,320 volunteers participating, highlighting SM’s growing influence and public enthusiasm for ocean protection.
SM By the Bay has conducted regular monthly cleanup activities since January 2025, demonstrating the company’s commitment to lasting environmental care.
Upcoming cleanup drives are scheduled for June 7 (World Oceans Day and Philippine Environment Month), September 20 (International Coastal Cleanup Day), and November 24 (National Day for Youth in Climate Action).
“Everyone has a role to play in achieving a cleaner, healthier planet. For us at SM, we always encourage Filipinos to be active participants in environmental preservation by joining our cleanup activities, segregating waste responsibly at home, and supporting the SM Waste Free Future campaign through our Recyclable, Disposable, and Compostable bins found in our malls,” said SM Supermalls President Steven Tan.
