Following the massive flooding that hit Metro Manila and other Luzon provinces in July 2025, a coalition of private institutions has organized two environmental initiatives to spark transformation: the Plog the Planet Parade and 6th International Sustainability Summit.
The Plog the Planet Parade, scheduled for September 28, 2025 at Lakeshore Taguig, combines running with environmental cleanup as participants pick up trash while making their way to the finish line. The activity aims to deliver a strong message that waste doesn’t belong in bodies of water.
“This isn’t just about picking up trash,” said Dr. Gem Brion Zabala, co-organizer. “It’s about protecting lives and futures. Last week’s flood showed what happens when we ignore the link between waste and disaster. These events offer a better way forward.”
Participants gain access to the 6th International Sustainability Summit on October 1, 2025 at Jose Rizal University in Mandaluyong City, where leaders from business, education, government, and civil society will share sustainability solutions and real-world stories.

Dutch sustainability expert Berend Aanraad, summit curator, emphasized that “sustainability is not a buzzword—it is a way of thinking, living, and leading. Real change starts close to home, with communities that care, habits that heal, and systems that serve people and the planet.”
The initiative offers tangible environmental benefits. Mangrove Matters PH will plant one mangrove seedling for every registered runner, providing certificates as proof of contribution to coastal reforestation. Through its Eco-Marathon, Trash to Cashback allows participants to earn Environmental Points by collecting recyclables, which can be exchanged for discounts and digital vouchers.
Event proceeds will support education, health, and livelihood programs in seven coastal communities in the Philippines through IamMIKA.
Key partners and sponsors include ACG Human Capital, Help Alliance, Bcon Japan, FutureFit Collab, JNE, Infinidad, Jose Rizal University, and Malaya Business Insight among others. The events target global goals including clean water, responsible consumption, zero poverty, and stronger communities.
Registration remains open for schools, companies, families, and local government units. To register or become a sponsor, contact plogtheplanet@futurefitcollab.org.
