The Motorcycle Taxi Community Philippines is urging Senator Raffy Tulfo, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Services, to prioritize the legalization of motorcycle taxis, which has been pending for five years. This call comes as the group highlights the potential benefits of formalizing motorcycle taxis to enhance urban mobility and create economic opportunities.
Chairman Romeo Maglunsod stated, “We believe that Senator Raffy Tulfo, a true ally of Filipino workers, is the new hope for every rider and passenger to officially recognize this transport service in our laws.” The pilot program initiated in 2019 includes companies like Angkas, JoyRide, and MOVE IT, with approximately 45,000 riders in Metro Manila. This initiative aims to assess the safety and viability of motorcycles as a public transport option.
Maglunsod emphasized that enacting the MC Taxi Law would significantly boost commuter confidence in motorcycle taxis as a reliable and affordable transportation mode. He noted that these services effectively address urban traffic issues by navigating congested streets and reducing travel times.
“The MC Taxi Law will establish new standards to protect the livelihoods and welfare of each rider,” Maglunsod explained. This includes standardized benefits and training programs for riders, ensuring consistent safety standards and improved service quality.
Support for legalizing motorcycle taxis has also been expressed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who recognizes the need for expanded transport options for commuters and small businesses. House Speaker Martin Romualdez has identified House Bill No. 3412 as a priority measure aimed at legalizing motorcycle taxis while reforming transportation network vehicle service regulations.
Senator Grace Poe has emphasized that a well-regulated framework would enhance transportation options for commuters and encourage healthy competition among service providers. However, despite this widespread backing, the legislation remains stalled. Maglunsod warned that continued delays could hinder industry growth and limit livelihood opportunities.
“Senator Tulfo, you are our hope for achieving our dream of official recognition under our laws. We have long been part of daily life for many Filipinos; it is time to establish clear regulations to improve service levels across all platforms,” Maglunsod concluded.
