JGF reinforces support to smallholder farmers
Jollibee Group Foundation (JGF) continues to support smallholder farmers by providing them access to technologically advanced farming techniques for more sustainable agriculture.
Launched in 2008, JGF’s Farmers Entrepreneurship Program (FEP) empowers and helps smallholder farmers sharpen their technical and business acumen as well as their partnership-building skills. Today, these farmers supply the vegetable requirements in some Jollibee, Chowking, Greenwich, and Mang Inasal favorites.
Since 2020, the Foundation has partnered with IBM’s The Weather Company for a more accurate community-level, 7-day weather forecast. JGF also worked with the Central Luzon State University to interpret the weather data and translate it into the prescribed farm practice for the day. The information is then shared in a private messaging group for faster dissemination among the farmers. The SMS feature of this system is now being developed for easier access.
The Onion and Vegetable Producers Cooperative (OVEPCO) farmers from Barangay Tabulac in San Jose City, Nueva Ecija were among the first to benefit from this system. Through the barangay-level forecasts, the farmers can adapt and better decide when to plant, fertilize, and harvest their crops.
This project currently supports 116 farmers in 12 barangays in San Jose City, Nueva Ecija and Alcala, Pangasinan.
Chelsea Travel app launched
Chelsea Logistics and its three shipping lines, namely Starlite Ferries, SuperCat, and Trans-Asia, deployed Chelsea Travel, a unified online booking system, which will provide passengers an easy, fast, and stress-free booking experience.
It will enable passengers to buy and pay their tickets when most convenient for them even outside business hours. It also reduces workload for the tellers thus optimizing customer service.
The Chelsea Group on August 8 officially launched the first phase of Chelsea Travel which allows passengers to book by just scanning the QR Code. They will be given access to the VIP lane at the ticket outlet so they can immediately pay without having to line up for a long time.
The second phase will enable passengers to pay online, skipping the manual transaction with a teller.
Fight vs cable theft
SKY bolsters its call and efforts to curb illegal cable cutting incidents, affecting cable TV and internet services for its subscribers nationwide, by officially partnering with major telco providers, with the PCTA, and local government units (LGUs) through the strengthened “Oplan Kontra Putol” campaign.
In the joint manifesto signed by executives from SKY and other telco companies, including Globe Telecom, PLDT and Smart Communications, Streamtech, Metroworks ICT, and Eastern Communications, Radius Telecoms, and the Philippine Cable and Telecommunications Association (PCTA), the group heeded the call for unity in protecting Filipino households from these illegal acts.
The manifesto looks to condemn such acts and hold individuals involved accountable under the rule of law, particularly with the implementation of RA 10515, also known as the Cable Theft Law that would charge perpetrators to face two to five years of imprisonment or pay hefty fines as imposed by the court.
As of August 5, SKY has reported 205 incidents of cable cutting and theft around Mega Manila, with the month of July incurring the greatest number of cases totaling 45, and Quezon City tallying the most number of cases spotted with 89 since January 2022. Four of the cases have been filed with criminal charges by corresponding telco partners. SKY also responded to cable cutting incidents in regional areas, with 111 cases tallied in Cebu alone since the beginning of 2022.
