Mondelēz International, a global leader in snacking, is actively promoting a more circular economy for packaging in the Philippines. Through various initiatives, the company has significantly reduced its packaging usage, evolved its packaging materials, and contributed to improving waste diversion systems in the country. Notably, Mondelēz International has successfully met its commitment to collecting and diverting the equivalent volumes of its post-consumer plastic packaging used in the Philippines, aligning with the local Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Law.

As part of its commitment to responsible snacking, Mondelēz International emphasizes providing snacks that are not only delicious but also produced sustainably. This involves using more eco-friendly ingredients and supporting the development of packaging that is both efficient and recyclable.

Mondelēz International is actively working to use lighter, safer, and more recyclable packaging materials. Globally, the company aims to reduce its use of virgin plastic packaging by five percent by 2025. In 2023, significant reductions were achieved in Southeast Asia, particularly for products like Oreo Mini and Chips Ahoy!, through packaging redesigns and the elimination of plastic trays.

The company’s recent global ESG report, titled “Snacking Made Right,” outlines its goal to have over 98 percent of its packaging designed for recyclability by 2025. As of 2023, 96 percent of its packaging worldwide meets recyclability standards, with ongoing efforts to increase the use of recycled content in plastic packaging.

Effective waste management systems are essential for successful recycling efforts. Mondelēz International is actively engaged in the UN Global Treaty for Plastic Pollution and collaborates with local partners like Plastic Credit Exchange to support the recovery and diversion of plastic waste. Through initiatives like the Aling Tindera program, which empowers small store owners to participate in plastic collection, the company contributes to reducing plastic pollution and supporting local communities.

Additionally, MondelÄ“z International invests in initiatives like Circulate Capital to address challenges in collecting and recycling flexible plastic films, a common packaging material in the snacking industry. By preventing plastic pollution and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, these efforts underscore the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable practices.
