Meralco PowerGen Corporation (MGEN) is set to develop a 49-megawatt (MW) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Toledo, Cebu as part of its efforts to enhance grid stability and support the country’s energy transition.
The facility will play a key role in ensuring reliable and balanced power delivery across the Visayas grid, particularly in maintaining the quality and safety of electricity reaching end-users. Given the region’s growing demand and the increasing share of variable renewable energy, battery energy storage has become essential in managing system reliability and ensuring sufficient grid support during peak and off-peak hours.

Rubio, President and CEO of MGEN. “Battery energy storage will be critical in managing variability in supply and demand, particularly as we integrate more renewable energy into the system.”
The Toledo project is its second BESS project in the country. MGEN’s planned MTerra Solar includes a large-scale 4,500 megawatt-hour (MWh) energy storage development in Nueva Ecija, which is designed to support its 3,500 megawatt-peak (MWp) solar power pipeline in Luzon.
MGEN is expecting to complete the first phase of its BESS facility with 25MW capacity in Toledo, Cebu by 2026, and the balance to be completed in 2027 subject to regulatory clearances.
