The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has launched its Spay it Forward initiative in partnership with the Pateros local government unit (LGU) and the Philippine Veterinary Medical Association (PVMA) to provide free spaying and neutering services. This initiative aims to address pet overpopulation and promote responsible pet ownership.

The program benefited over 120 cats and dogs in Pateros, the only municipality in Metro Manila without its own veterinary office. During the one-day event held at Pateros Elementary School, participating pets also received anti-rabies vaccinations.

The PVMA and Biyaya Animal Care contributed their expertise to ensure the success of this initiative. The collaboration aligns with their mission to improve animal welfare and public health through effective pet population management.

Meralco’s animal welfare advocacy is very much aligned with our PVMA Rabies Elimination initiative and we believe it will be synergistic with our program. If we align and combine our efforts and resources, we will be able to do more both for the animals and the pet owners alike,” said PVMA President Dr. Harris Constantino.

The humane approach to animal control is spay/ neuter, vaccinations, and education. Planned Pet  Parenthood is a key factor that contributes to a healthier community that is inclusive of cats and dogs,” Biyaya Animal Care Co-Founder and President Rina Ortiz, for her part said.

Meralco’s commitment to animal welfare extends beyond this initiative. Recently, the company conducted trap-neuter-vaccinate-release (TNVR) activities within its Pasig City compound. Meralco Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications Joe R. Zaldarriaga participated in the Spay it Forward event, reinforcing the company’s dedication to community-driven animal welfare activities.

Pateros Mayor Miguel “Ike” Ponce expressed gratitude for Meralco’s support in prioritizing animal welfare through this campaign. Together, they aim to build a more compassionate community.

Meralco plans to expand its Spay it Forward initiative by collaborating with other local government units and city veterinarians. This expansion will enhance access to spaying and neutering services for more communities.

At the heart of Meralco’s animal welfare advocacy is a deep sense of malasakit, or compassion, towards the communities it serves. By providing accessible spaying and neutering services, Meralco strives to create safer and healthier environments where both humans and animals can thrive.

Through initiatives like Spay it Forward, Meralco continues to demonstrate its commitment to improving animal welfare while fostering community engagement and responsibility.
