West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) recently earned recognition under the “Clean and Green Energy” category of the 2023 Europa Awards, organized by the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP).

The ECCP hailed Maynilad’s efforts in pursuing clean and green energy solutions through the implementation of technological innovations that minimized energy consumption in its water supply operations. Some of Maynilad’s energy management strategies include the installation of photovoltaic solar power farms to run several facilities at La Mesa Compound in Quezon City, which effectively lowered the company’s carbon emissions by 21 tons per month. Furthermore, the company has started its gradual transition to using electric vehicles in its operations to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

ECCP’s Europa Awards recognizes companies that show exceptional performance and contributions in promoting sustainability in line with global standards and the Philippine Development Plan. The Clean and Energy category award that Maynilad won is given to companies that have successfully incorporated the use of clean and renewable energy sources in its day-to-day operations, and actively promoted the use of clean energy within the country, thereby aiding the government in its thrust to reduce the country’s greenhouse gas emissions by 70% by 2030 as stipulated in the Paris Agreement.

It is an annual event that celebrates outstanding achievements in corporate governance organized by the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD) working closely with the Philippine Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Insurance Commission (IC).

The ASEAN Corporate Governance Scorecard (AGCS) is the instrument used for the assessment and ranking of publicly listed and insurance companies in six ASEAN countries – Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. The IC, SEC and ICD assess companies based on the ACGS, which serves as an instrument to determine the management of an organization as well as its adherence to governmental regulations. The ACGS evaluates companies across five areas of corporate governance, including rights of shareholders, equitable treatment of shareholders, the role of shareholders, disclosure and transparency, and the responsibilities of the board.

Through the SEC Office for the Advancement of Strategic Investments in SMEs (OASIS), the regulatory commission promotes alternative financing options for small-scale enterprises and start-ups, helping them secure financing through the capital market.
