Globe, GCash top execs Asia’s most influential list

Globe president and CEO Ernest Cu and GCash president and CEO Martha Sazon are among personalities on Tatler Magazine’s 2021 Asia’s Most Influential list, hailed as among the most innovative changemakers shaping the region through positive impact.

Cu said the recognition is proof of the impact that Globe’s executives and employees make through hard work and the commitment to serve.

Assuming Globe’s top post in 2009, Cu’s “fail fast” attitude brought the company to success.  He steered its massive modernization program, driving the company from being utility-centric to becoming a digital solutions platform. He also introduced numerous network and IT enhancements.

Sazon leveraged more than 20 years of leadership experience across industries, including 12 years in various segments in Globe, to lead the exponential growth of GCash.

Research collaboration

The Ateneo de Manila University and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) recently inked an agreement that will establish greater collaboration between the two parties to further enhance the research capability of the latter.

With the agreement, which was signed last January 26 in a virtual ceremony, the BSP and the Ateneo, through the Department of Economics and the Ateneo Center for Economic Research and Development, can now undertake research independently, jointly, or collaboratively with the aim to help inform policy formulation and decisions.

Researchers from the Ateneo will be designated as Visiting Research Economists (VREs) while conducting their study. At least four members of the Economics Department Faculty will be VREs at the BSP, and together with economists at the Central Bank and a graduate student from the Ateneo, research can be undertaken in various fields such as financial sector governance, banking systems, competition, and financial inclusion.

Online leadership event

Pfizer Philippines convened its leadership and management team–from the country manager all the way to district managers–in an online kickoff meeting last January 7.

The meeting, which had the theme “Connecting Hearts, Connecting Science,” had Pilipinas Shell’s first female president and CEO Lorelie Quiambao Osial as keynote speaker. She shared insights and stories, and answered questions about her 20-year career with the multinational energy company.

Osial believes that there is no formula to be a strong leader, although there can be a single framework that allows for differences or changes.

“As a leader, you do need to be clear about your own purpose and the purpose of your organization. Be ready to evolve, have a growth mindset, communicate purposefully and with the right frequency, and value your people and resources,” she said.

One of the things she realized during the pandemic, when the changes came so swiftly and unexpectedly, was to stop being reactive and go proactive. “Let’s switch the way we think–let’s look at the worst-case scenario,” Osial said. “It becomes a bit easier because you have taken a step back, looked at what’s happening and what could happen and having faced and planned for all that, you become more courageous and braver.”
