German cleaning technology leader Kärcher has partnered with the Intramuros Administration (IA) to launch a restorative cleaning project at Fort Santiago, focusing on the reconstructed main gate and wall façades of Baluartillo de San Miguel and Medio Baluarte de San Francisco.
The initiative is part of Kärcher’s 90th anniversary challenge to complete 90 cleaning projects worldwide in 2025. “As we celebrate our long-standing passion for technical solutions that make a difference, Kärcher proudly recommits to preserving cultural heritage across the globe. Having the esteemed Intramuros Administration as our partner is instrumental to this initiative’s success, enabling us to honor the memory of war victims and celebrate Filipinos’ heroic sacrifices,” said Darwin Banez, General Manager of Kärcher Philippines.
The project employed advanced cleaning technologies to address environmental issues, particularly organic growth. Kärcher experts trained IA personnel to use hot water high-pressure cleaners in steam mode, operating at 0.5-1 bar pressure and 95°C temperature. This method effectively kills biological growth in the stone’s pores.
Fort Santiago, constructed in 1571 under Spanish navigator Miguel López de Legazpi, serves as a national monument within Manila’s walled city. The site joins other Philippine landmarks that have benefited from Kärcher’s restoration services, including St. Andrew’s Cathedral, San Sebastian Basilica, Plaza Miranda, San Agustin Church, People Power Monument, and Rizal Monument.
