Jobin-SQM, Inc. (JSI), a subsidiary of Nickel Asia Corporation’s clean energy arm Emerging Power, Inc., is expanding its sustainability efforts by producing “Bokashi Balls” – an organic water rehabilitation technology that improves water quality and promotes healthy aquatic ecosystems in local communities.
Bokashi Balls, also known as Mabuhay Balls, are organic spheres infused with beneficial microorganisms that slowly dissolve when placed in water bodies, breaking down harmful toxins and improving water quality. JSI partnered with Sambali Agri Farm in Zambales to learn this craft and share knowledge with partner communities.
“Simply, the Bokashi Balls, when they dissolve, reduce bad bacteria and help improve water quality in rivers, stagnant bodies of water, and other various waterways. It is organic so it is sustainable and a safe way of addressing water and other aquatic pollution,” said JSI Environmental and Community Relations Senior Associate and Pollution Control Officer Orlando Dabu, Jr.

JSI collaborates with the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority Ecology Department, Tribong Ayta Ambala ng Pastolan, Inc., and local government units to advocate for clean water importance.
The project aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 14: Life Below Water. The technology traces back to Japanese scientist Dr. Teruo Higa’s Effective Microorganisms (EM-1) innovation.
For JSI, which operates a 172 MW solar power plant in Mt. Sta Rita, Zambales, Bokashi Balls represent dedication to sustainability driven by innovation and community participation toward a green future.
