Top taxpayer
JTI Philippines was recognized again as one of the top taxpayers by the Bureau of Customs (BOC) during a simple awarding ceremony held on February 15.
JTI Philippines was awarded Top 2 Taxpayer having paid a total of P323 million in import duties in 2022.
As a top taxpayer, JTI Philippines was also cited for “supporting the efforts of the Post Clearance Audit Group (PCAG) in promoting voluntary compliance among importers.”
BOC-PCAG assistant commissioner Vincent Maronilla commended JTI Philippines and nine other port stakeholders from various industries for being “an example to the industry where you belong” as well as “proving that post-clearance works and showing the value of volunteerism.”
JTI Philippines general manager John Freda for his part said: “This citation is another reaffirmation of our continued support of the country’s development goals specifically in the area of revenue generation. We note that the top taxpayer award was made possible even amid the increasing challenge of the illegal tobacco trade which serves to cheat everyone in Filipino society.”
This year’s award will be JTI’s third consecutive Top Taxpayer Award since the Covid-19 pandemic broke out in 2020.

Excellence in health, safety
Holcim Philippines Inc.’s La Union plant was recently recognized by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) for excellence in health and safety.
Holcim’s plant in Bacnotan was recognized for its Safety Control Program by Region 1 office of the DOLE during the 12th Gawad Kaligtasan at Kalusugan (GKK) Best Practice Award in January. Holcim La Union received a plaque and P10,000 prize and qualified for the Gawad Kaligtasan at Kalusugan Champions, which recognizes the “best of the best” in health and safety.
The plant received the award after a rigorous review from the DOLE. The process included a presentation of programs for occupational safety and health, environment, and communities validated by DOLE inspectors. Participating organizations must not have been issued a notice of violation, recorded a lost time injury or fatality, and submitted required documents to the DOLE on time over the past two years.
Holcim Philippines Head of Health, Safety, Security and Environment Head CJ Guinto: “Our company is thankful to the DOLE for recognizing the continuing efforts to strengthen our health and safety culture. Our commitment to keeping people safe has helped us maintain our Zero Harm goals in operations and overcome the challenges of the pandemic. This award will further motivate us to ensure everyone involved in our business is healthy and safe.”
The DOLE awards the GKK to encourage companies to implement their safety, health, and environment programs to improve the welfare of people in the workplace.
