Construction materials for AFP

GMA Network, through GMA Kapuso Foundation (GMAKF), turned over construction materials to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) at Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City on April 23 under GMAKF’s Operation Bayanihan: Odette and Kapuso Para Sa Kawal projects.

GMAKF’s donation will benefit the Philippine Army units which were also severely affected by Typhoon Odette in December 2021.

A handover ceremony was held at the General Headquarters Canopy in Camp Aguinaldo, presided over by AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Andres Centino, together with GMA Kapuso Foundation executive vice president and COO Rikki Escudero-Catibog. Present in the ceremony as well were Brig. Gen.Raoul Rommel Honasan, acting deputy chief of staff for logistics, and Maj. Gen. l Gerardo Catindoy, chief engineer.

The Philippine Army’s 30th Infantry Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division, and 8th Infantry Division received 780 light bulbs, 1,100 corrugated roof sheets, 114 pieces of ridge rolls, one unit of G.I. heavy duty double truss, and nine boxes of roofing nails. These military divisions worked closely with GMAKF in disaster relief distributions for Typhoons Odette and Agaton. The Army provides transportation, manpower, and security which enables GMAKF to reach disaster-stricken and remote areas.

Japan confers decoration on Villar

The Government of Japan announced on April 29 the conferment of The Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun on Honorable Manuel Bamba Villar, Jr., former Senate President and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, in recognition of his contributions to strengthening economic bilateral relations between Japan and the Philippines.

During Villar’s term as senate president, the Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement (JPEPA) and the “Protocol Amending the Convention Between Japan and the Republic of the Philippines for the Avoidance of Double Taxation and the Prevention of Fiscal Evasion with Respect to Income Taxes” were ratified in October and September 2008 thanks to his ruling. As senator, he supported the ratification of the “Agreement on Technical Cooperation Between the Government of Japan and the Republic of the Philippines,” which was adopted into a Senate Resolution in March 2011. Japan highly valued his efforts in supporting and promoting the bilateral and economic relations between Japan and the Philippines.

In a statement, Villar said, “I am deeply honored by their recognition of my humble efforts to promote and “strengthen the bilateral economic relations” between the Philippines and Japan… Our “common goals of ensuring peace and stability, promoting economic growth, and human security” bind our two countries and our peoples as we continue to face global challenges.

CEB transfers

Cebu Pacific (CEB) announced beginning May 2 all Cebu Pacific and Cebgo flights to and from Clark will operate at the newly opened Clark International Airport Terminal 2.

CEB currently flies daily between Clark and Cebu.

Globe names Raul Macatangay as new CIO

Leading digital solutions platform Globe has appointed Raul Macatangay as Chief Information Officer (CIO) effective May 1, 2022. Macatangay was previously the company’s vice president for financial control.

Returning to Globe five years ago, Macatangay has more than 25 years of leadership experience. He occupied key positions in Information Technology, Technology Risk Consulting, System Implementation, Business Transformation, Customer Intelligence and Analytics, Marketing, Research, Finance, and Enterprise Risk Management.

Outgoing CIO Carlo Malana will be taking on a new challenge as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of KarmanEdge Inc., Globe’s joint venture partnership with ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC) and Ayala Corporation.

Macatangay, a magna cumlaude graduate at the University of Santo Tomas, has led Globe’s Postpaid Business and Devices, Portfolio Management, Business Intelligence, Revenue Assurance, and Internal Audit for Wireline and Carrier Business, Business Centers and Stores.

Macatangay has also served as Vice President, Marketing Controller and Head for Customer Analytics of One Food Group Management Services, Inc.; Head for Product Marketing for TV and Audio Video Business of Samsung Electronics Philippines; and Director for Technology Risk Consulting of SGV & Co.

Airspeed advocacy for tourism

Airspeed Group of Companies recently launched KHPH or Kahanga-hanga Pilipinas, an e-commerce advocacy program seen to jumpstart tourism.

KHPH takes online buyers on a virtual visit of the Philippine provinces’ local tourist spots, activities, and products that can be bought for gifting, “pasalubong,” and other purposes.

NGCP donation

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) continues to turn over projects from its pledged P1-billion donation in response to the pandemic.

NGCP turned over donning and doffing chambers for medical frontliners at East Avenue Medical Center and National Kidney and Transplant Institute.

The P2-million prefabricated facility was built from four container vans equipped with sanitation facilities and changing rooms where healthcare workers can safely put on and take off personal protective equipment (PPE) before and after their shifts. NGCP is also set to turn over two other donning and doffing chambers to Rizal Medical Center and Dr. Jose N. Rodriguez Memorial Hospital as isolation rooms also set to be turned over to Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center.

Last year, NGCP also donated ambulances, mechanical ventilators, RT-PCR machines and other medical equipment to key hospitals around the country, as well as medical supplies to more than 300 hospitals and local health units.

Pioneering ‘Atletang Ayala’

Ayala Center For Excellence in Sports (ACES) on April 30 named eight national athletes selected for its pilot program Atletang Ayala.

Launched last March, ACES is part of Ayala’s commitment to nation-building by providing holistic support to the country’s emerging athletic Olympic bets.

Connectivity for youth advocacy group

PLDT-Smart Foundation (PSF) together with Smart Communications Inc. recently turned over 50 sets of Smart LTE Pocket WiFi with P150,000 worth of load cards for the students and youth beneficiaries of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) of Makati.

The initiative is part of PSF and Smart’s #NoLearnerLeftBehind advocacy which aims to bridge the divide between digital education and teachers, students and schools nationwide

The Smart LTE pocket wifi units and the load cards will enable the beneficiaries to connect to the nationwide Smart LTE network, allowing them to access the internet for their learning needs.

The PLDT group and YMCA are also exploring opportunities for hyper-collaboration in their shared advocacies on children’s rights, cyber wellness and safety, education, livelihood, and mental health awareness.
