DOST-PTRI, Bayo Manila partner to transform textile waste through TexRev’s ‘Fabric-to-Yarn’ innovation

The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) and Bayo Manila Inc. launched the Textile Revitalized (TexRev) Project on March 7 to convert post-industrial fabric scraps into sustainable yarns, addressing the textile industry’s waste crisis.

In 2023, Philippine household spending on clothing and footwear reached nearly ₱232 billion, reflecting the sector’s growth and increasing waste problems. Globally, textile production rose from 58 million tons in 2000 to 109 million tons in 2020, with projections reaching 160 million tons by 2030.

Bayo Manila, which generates around 16 tons of textile waste annually, sees TexRev as a solution to landfill overflow and environmental degradation.

Through our commitment to the UN Global Compact and collaborations with PTRI, we are proving that a Filipino fashion brand can be a leader in circular fashion,” said Anna Losanta Marie Lagon, Co-CEO of Bayo Manila, during the 2025 National Textile Convention.

The TexRev process involves collecting and sorting textile waste, shredding it into fibers, and spinning it into yarns that are blended with virgin materials for strength and durability.

TexRev is more than just a recycling initiative, it’s a movement toward a circular economy, demonstrating that waste can be transformed into new opportunities,” said DOST-PTRI Director Dr. Julius L. Leaño, Jr.

At the project launch, industry leaders discussed sustainability’s role in reshaping the creative sector, with panelists including representatives from Bayo Manila Foundation, UN’s Race to Net Zero Philippines, and the UAP Green Architecture Movement.
