DMCI Holdings, SMPC land in gender-equality Index
For the second straight year, DMCI Holdings ( DMC) and Semirara Mining and Power Corp. (SCC) landed in the Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index (GEI), a modified market capitalization-weighted index that aims to track the performance of public companies committed to transparency in gender-data reporting.
Only four listed companies in the Philippines joined the 2022 roster that includes 418 companies across 45 countries and regions. Member companies represent a variety of sectors, including financials, technology and utilities, which collectively have the highest company representation in the index.
The 2022 GEI measures gender equality across five pillars: female leadership & talent pipeline, equal pay & gender pay parity, inclusive culture, anti-sexual harassment policies, and pro-women brand.
“While our businesses belong to male-dominated industries, we do not distinguish roles and opportunities according to gender. We empower and promote people based on their individual merits and contributions to the organization,” said DMCI Holdings and SMPC Chairman Isidro Consunji.
DMCI Holdings and SMPC submitted a social survey created by Bloomberg, in collaboration with subject matter experts globally. Those included on this year’s index scored at or above a global threshold established by Bloomberg to reflect disclosure and the achievement or adoption of best-in-class statistics and policies.
Hopeful 2022 for PH
Metro Pacific Investments Corp. (MPIC) welcomed the new year by launching its new corporate anthem “Bayan Sulong Na,” a rallying call for the country to face the coming years with hope and affirmation that no matter the circumstances, there is strength in facing it together.
“The resilience of Filipinos has always been unmatched. Our ability to get back on our feet after the unimaginable is something we are truly known for,” said MPIC president and CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan. “However, our message moving forward goes beyond recovery and focuses on rebuilding and resurgence.”
“Bayan Sulong Na” brings in 2022 with a strengthened sense of hope. The song encapsulates MPIC’s roles and responsibilities as a partner in nation-building, as well as its hopes and aspirations for all Filipinos — to face the coming years with the belief that they have someone to count on.
“Prior to the challenges posed by the past couple of years, we at MPIC have always been committed to becoming reliable partners in development, for both the country and its people,” said MPIC VP for PR & Corporate Communications Melody del Rosario. “As we move forward this 2022, we introduced this anthem to solidify our dedication to the progress and change we envision for us all.”
The song accompanied MPIC’s 2022 Corporate AVP, depicting how MPIC’s various business units in power, water, tollroads, light rail, and hospitals, alongside its corporate social responsibility initiatives, have continued to provide service, aid, and assistance, to communities all around the country.

Bohol rehabilitation
SmarTrade, together with ATFX Cares, Cebu Pacific Air, and GenSys Global Solutions, Inc, distributed relief goods to a municipality in Bohol as part of a rehabilitation project to aid many communities still suffering from no electricity and lack of potent drinking water in the aftermath of Typhoon Odette.
SmarTrade volunteers reached out to a municipality in Bohol that has not been reached yet by any relief efforts – the municipality of Bien Unido. The other beneficiary of the project was Tangnan Habitat, a housing community for people with disabilities, specifically the blind.
This is SmarTrade’s first outreach project in 2022. It is the company’s way of giving back to the Filipino community for the support they received in the past four years providing financial literacy through their free learning sessions on online trading and other investment topics.
Aboitiz: strength in synergy
Synergy among key stakeholders is crucial to building more resilient power systems, an official of Aboitiz Power Corp. said in light of the rebuilding efforts after typhoon Odette damaged communities across the Visayas and Mindanao in December.
In a webinar dubbed “Road to Resilience: Preparing Our Communities for Natural Disaster” on January 26, AboitizPower Distribution Business Group chief operating officer Anton Mari Perdices said Odette was a sobering experience for many utilities, adding that “when a natural disaster like Typhoon Odette strikes with severity that no single corporation can handle, collaboration really is the way to go.”
“We have a long way to go before we can have truly resilient power systems, especially against the backdrop of more severe weather incidents like this recent typhoon, but we will get there. There has to be a balance between the responsibilities of the government, private sector, and even consumers to make this system work,” he said.
The webinar, organized by Liveable Cities Philippines, sought to address the steps needed to take to prepare for and build resilience against similar storms in the future or in other parts of the country.
