Lifeline for struggling urban families
San Miguel Corp.’s (SMC) pandemic food relief drivehas yielded close to two million pieces of nutribun and pandesal breads throughout Metro Manila and neighboring provinces. Began in March last year, its feeding center in Tondo continues to provide food aid to over 200,000 families living in Manila’s poorest districts.
SMC president Ramon S. Ang said while the company’s pandemic response efforts these past few months had shifted largely towards supporting the nationwide vaccination effort, the company has not stopped providing food support for the underprivileged who are most vulnerable to hunger.
From March 2020 to date, SMC, through San Miguel Mills Inc., has distributed a total of 1,895,826 pieces of nutribun and pandesal breads. Of this, 1,549,318 were energy-packed nutribuns, or SMC’s version of the calorie-dense bread first introduced in the 1970s to combat malnutrition among schoolchildren, as part of the government’s nutrition program.
Meanwhile, through its SMC Better World Tondo community center–which functions as a food bank and feeding center and is one of the company’s three Better World community facilities–the company served a total 168,180 meals and provided 74,099 grocery packages to some 211, 253 families, since September 2019.

Concentrix vaccination
Concentrix Corp. expanded its free COVID-19 Vaccination on October 21 to include staff dependents.
Early this year, Concentrix was among the first private companies to announce its commitment to provide free vaccination for its approximately 100,000 staff nationwide, as a voluntary and optional benefit. It was also the first customer experience and tech services company to implement its COVID-19 inoculation program called Concentrix #WorthTheShot. The staff inoculation began in July, now at 50 percent of the workforce, and still ongoing.
As vaccine supply stabilized, Concentrix has now expanded free vaccination to staff’s dependents who also volunteer. Concentrix aims to finish all registered staff and dependent vaccination by January 2022.

Breast cancer awareness
In observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, SM Cares, together with the Department of Health (DOH) and the Philippine Breast Cancer Society (PBCS) held its annual Pink Ribbon Day for Breast Cancer Awareness on Oct. 7 via Zoom.
A total of 255 participants joined the virtual celebration and listened to the panel of medical experts and SM breast cancer survivors who shared their knowledge, expertise and personal experiences on the dreaded disease.
In her welcome remarks, SM Cares Program head on Women and Breastfeeding Mothers Pearl Jayagan Turley highlighted the need for better awareness of breast cancer among Filipinos, especially since the Philippines is reported to be the country with the highest number of breast cancer cases every year in Asia.
Philippine Breast Cancer Society board member Dr. Jose Rhoel de Leon kicked off the online session with the top 13 frequently asked questions about breast cancer and the misconceptions and myths related to it, including myths about supposed causes of breast cancer like wearing of a sports bra, one’s exposure to microwave or the perceived degenerative effect on the spine after chemotherapy.
The second speaker was the Program Manager for the National Integrated Cancer Control Program of the Department of Health (DOH), Dr. Clarito Cairo Jr., who talked about the government’s breast cancer assistance program, which aims to help qualified Filipino patients in the treatment of their breast cancer.
The Pink Ribbon Day for Breast Cancer Awareness is one of the many ways SM Cares supports the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3, which “seeks to ensure health and well-being for all, at every stage of life.”
