ITOGON, BENGUET — Kristine Joy Semillia, a 23-year-old psychology student and mental health advocate, was named the First Happiest Itogonian during ceremonies at Fianza Memorial Gymnasium.
The Cebuana Lhuillier Foundation, Inc. (CLFI), partnering with the Municipality of Itogon and Itogon Indigenous Peoples Organization, launched this localized Search for the Happiest Pinoy to inspire communities and honor individuals living with optimism despite adversity.
“Our goal has always been to shine a light on stories that uplift and inspire,” said Jean Henri Lhuillier, PJ Lhuillier Inc. President and CEO. “Efforts like these allow us to recognize the resilience of Filipinos like Kristine—individuals who prove that happiness is not the absence of hardship, but the triumph of spirit. Her story is exactly why we do what we do.“
Kristine survived the devastating 2009 Typhoon Pepeng landslide in Barangay Loacan at age eight, losing her parents, sister, and nine relatives. Now a Naval Reservist, youth leader, and motivational speaker, she empowers trauma survivors and young people across Itogon.
“I am not just a survivor—I am a testament to the power of resilience, faith, and community,” Kristine shared, attributing her strength to unwavering faith in God.
Winners from five sectors each received ₱3,000 and certificates, while overall winner Kristine received ₱20,000 and a commemorative plaque:
- Myra Gwyn Cornel Guilao (Women): Health officer and single mom who overcame serious college health issues
- Jenifer Elitan Sadey (PWD): Stage 5 dialysis patient providing spiritual support to fellow patients
- Greg Landocan (LGBTQIA+): Magna Cum Laude educator advocating inclusivity while caring for his ailing mother
- Juna Ballasio-Tavara (Public Servant): Teacher supporting students with disabilities and special needs
CLFI Executive Director Jonathan Batangan noted, “Beyond the gold mines Itogon is known for, its true treasures are its people—those who rise above adversity with a smile and a sense of purpose.”
This grassroots effort builds momentum for the Global Search for the Happiest Pinoy, offering ₱500,000 tax-free to the grand winner and ₱35,000 to category finalists across expanded categories including Masayahing Gen Z, Happy at 60, and Katutubo.
