For over three decades, SM has championed sports development through accessible facilities and programs. This vision began with SM Prime Executive Committee Chairman Hans T. Sy’s foresight in September 1992, integrating world-class sports development into everyday mall life.

The SM Skating Academy serves as the premier program nurturing ice skating skills across all ages and levels—from Learn to Skate beginners to advanced Figure Skating, Ice Hockey, and Speed Skating competitors.

SM’s impact shines through Filipino athletes making international marks. Michael Martinez, the first Filipino Winter Olympian, now coaches full-time at SM Skating. Rising stars include Skye Chua (2025 Winter University Games competitor), Cathryn Limketkai (Top 10 at 2025 Asian Winter Games), and Hans Matthew Buemio (first homegrown Filipino in ISU Junior World Cup Series). The Philippine Women’s Ice Hockey Team recently claimed the 2025 IIHF Women’s Asia Cup championship.

Beyond ice sports, SM builds vibrant ecosystems through SM Game Park and SM Bowling, nurturing talent in Billiards, Bowling, Table Tennis, and Archery. New permanent Pickleball courts across SM malls expand opportunities for community participation.

“Building our malls has always gone hand-in-hand with creating platforms for growth—including sports. By creating venues like SM Skating, we give young athletes opportunities to train, build discipline, and prepare for global representation,” said Hans T. Sy.

The SM Skating Academy is now accepting enrollees. For registration, email smlearntoskate@gmail.com
